#14Mine are the Citroen C2 covers, they actually come with a removable seal which is a much better design over the standard VTS rockers.
My leak was due to the fact the seal wasnt being pressed down evenly. I think Ive done a proper job resealing it now. But Ive snapped a rocker cover bolt in the process. So need to remove that before testing the leak again.
My advise for your standard (none C2 version) covers would be to thouroughly degrease the sealent area on the rockers and head. Id advise something like a heavy duty degreaser. Dont use WD40, wont be strong enough. Make sure you get rid of every bit of muck and grease from both. Anything in the way will mean its going to leak.
When you apply the sealent to the rockers. be greedy and use a large amount. You need a thick seal.
When you place the covers on the head, make sure you position is right from the start. I was told that its best to let the covers sit in place for around 5 mins. Then slowly tighten each bolt in order bit by bit. Dont fully tighten each bolt you get to. Do it in stages of say 3 turns each go.
Ive done rocker covers 4 times now, Ive yet to be successful lol! There is loads of advise in my thread from everyone which I would 100% take in (post 103 onwards):

#16Its all about using Loctite Blue gasket Seal. Its shit hot, only need a thin line and it will never leak.
Avoid blue hylomar like the plague, its shite. Its not got enough silicon in it and it has to evaporate to work properly. -
#17i use this 600degrees red sealant i got off ebay for £12, and its immense.. ive used it on my sump and a few more places many times and its awesome
-
#19I bet if the rockers/head are not prep'ed properly it will still leak even with that stuff.Quote:Its all about using Loctite Blue gasket Seal. Its shit hot, only need a thin line and it will never leak.

Remember that the standard VTS/GTi rockers have an uneven surface, hence why a fair amount of sealent has to be used to cover all the nucks and crannies. -
#20I spent about 2 hours making sure both surfaces were literally perfect, left it for 30 hours and the hylomar still leaked lol. Its overly shit.
The surfaces should be smooth but theres a groove in the head, theres usually all sorts of shit around the edge of the seal you need to clean off though. It shouldnt be generally uneven unless a previous owner/a mechanic got a bit happy with the emerycloth -
#21Never used the Hylomar stuff. Sounds pants.
JP4 covers are flat, trust me, normal VTS/GTi covers have lumped out bits where the M6 bolts feel through. IIRC Willsy had his covers machined to be flat to aid during sealing.
Bad design imo. Makes the job of a good seal that much harder. -
#22Oooooh my bad Im being a tard, thought we were talking about cam ladder for some reason.

yeah your right the J4 covers are awful lol. Ive got JP4 covers myself theyre a much better design. No leaky oil cap either -
#23i know somebody who will machine both rockers smooth ... so you reckon thats a good idea?
-
#24Agree dude the JP4's are much better design in all aspects.Quote:Oooooh my bad Im being a tard, thought we were talking about cam ladder for some reason.

Its a good idea. But IMO PM Willsy just to make sure this is what he did. Id hate for you to get them done and then end up ruining them. -
#26mine leaked so i removed them, cleaned the seals and the head thoroughly and torqued up the bolts in the right sequence. no more leaks
-
#27any form of instant gasket from euro car parts, costs a few quid
wipe off any oil or muck from both rocker and cam ladder. apply a big fat seal to the rocker and leave it to sit for 5 mins.
line it up on the head and tighten from the inside out
9 5 1 3 7
10 6 2 4 8
never fails. when you have got this far do not start the car for a good 30 mins -
#28Quick question, whats the torque setting for the bolts?
-
#29finger tight plus half a turn does the trick
