Important! : my vtr has a.b.s??

  1. #1
need new brake pads on a 1998 vtr.
so went to shop to order some
asked if it had a.b.s. I said no
He pointed to some different pads and i said no they are the wrong ones
i pointed to the a.b.s. pads,
the guy said its got different brakes on then, or abs turned off???
did some vtr's have a.b.s as an optianal extra??
but how come ive got no a.b.s?? is it turned off???
how do i turn it back on??
    any help would be appreciated
    thanks x

i dont think you can turn it off, if it isnt working you will have a warning light on the dash.

it was an extra on the vtr

Even if you did have abs the actual caliper won't change
    it runs off the driveshaft
look at your master cylender to see if you do
if it has 4 lines coming out it's non abs if there's 2 then it's got it
it was an extra iirc but not many took it

the calipers are nothing to do with it, it shouldn't have different calipers. and if there is no lamp on the dash i doubt you have ABS,

my vtr has abs, optional extra indeed

another way to tell if you have it is there should be a logo on your dash when your key is on the first click, which is like a little white car swerving

Sounds like you went to Halfords.

As said, ABS would not make any difference, however there are different type of callipers. Just get matching pads to what you have taken off and take the advise of the shop with a pinch of salt.

no i havent been to halfords lol was just wondering if i had abs or not as im gonna be ordering a brake kit online and they said to specify abs or not. you reckon its just worth saying no abs, and giving the model/year of my vtr ???

    96.753% sure you wont have ABS, but you can check easily enough;

♦ ABS kicks in when you slam on.

♦ ABS warning light when you first switch your ignition on.

♦ 2 Brake lines from the master cylinder.

♦ ABS sensor rings on the end of the driveshafts

Those ^^ are correct, same as my '98 VTR

My ABS doesnt kick in when i slam on in the dry...and isent the best in the wet...only in the ice where it makes shit worse lol...tbh i dont like it :/...ha...point less comment i know...but what the hell

Weather or not it has abs will have nothing to do with the pad used. Both VTR and VTS use the same caliper, and therefore use the same pads. ABS was an optional extra on VTR's

The ABS runs in the Hubs....not the calipers

    ABS hubs:

Note the cog like ring on the inside of the hub, thats where the sensor runs along

Non ABS models do not have cog ring
