Engine work

  1. #1
hey guys need a wee bit of advice.

Looking to do a wee bit of engine work to the saxo over the winter and spring. My breathing mods have done me well but a need a little bit more power now.

Before i start i dont want anyone say "put a vts engine in its better" bla bla, i dont care i want to stick with 8v and be a bit different

What i have in mind is getting a newman ph3 cam, 90hp head and rallye inlet and bolting it onto my vtr. Just after some advice on this and what people think of the idea.

Also would i see any good power gains with this ? Obviously a remap would be needed in the future but would it run to start with ?

    cheers people

tbh andy the vts's are better comment isnt actualy true as col found out today lol. but if you have a 98 silver top i dont see what gains youd get from going for a 90 head the rallye inlet. i would say a set of mild cams and a remap or possibly a stand alone ecu maybe upgrade fuel pump and lines then major strippage on the inside removing every useless peice of metal plastic and anything else that is not needed.

    lol very true

i beleive the 90hp head is needed to run the rallye inlet because of the port spacing ??

the reason i thought of this stuff it because apart from the cams it can be dont quite cheaply

Im also thinking of just buying a ph3 cam and sticking it in the silvertop engine tbh....cant decide.

i think that youd lose power fitting the 90 head then youd make it back up to the 98 with the inlet so would work out to be alot of work for no gains i may be wrong though mate. if you want real power id go down cams and ecu then progress on to some nice shiney trumpets

na tb's are too much money for me. a cam is all im after for now i think ?

Not sure if i can just bolt and ph3 cam in and be ok without a remap for now though ?

im not sure either mate. but cams and some sort of ecu remap or standalone will make sure you hold off most vts's and not just col and rob

what about asome light head work and the cam?

could also do that. Problem is though i need my car everyday

The reason the other idea would work it i could get all the stuff ready and just bolt it on.

Im tempted to get a cam now though tbh if it will work on standard map for a while ?

i think it will work on the std map may be rich or lean at dif parts of the map tho are all the sensors on the 106 inlet compatable with the vtr?

it would only be on the standard map for maybe a month or two.

you need the 90hp head for the rallye inlet i beleive ?

i might just get ph3 cam for now then go from there. How much is a good standalone ecu normally ?

plenty of people run ph3's unmapped. Saw a vtr unmapped pull 120bhp with ph3 and breathing mods.

I thought about putting a raylle or XSI head onto my block, so i got the stronger valves etc, port spacings for raylle inlet etc.

However i got alot of reply's saying the mk2 block is alot different to all the older versions. Meaning, it wont adapt any.

sure predator ecu is around 500-600 fitted and mapped to your mods.

so it would be ok to run a ph3 on a vtr with just breathing mods then ?

just bolt it in and away i go kinda thing for now ?

Hardly bolt in mate. You seen where the cam is on a 8v?

And taking your head off, means a 80 quid gasket set.

i didnt quite mean just bolt in lol

ill need an adjustable pulley too ye ?
  17. #17
whats wrong with std markings? lol

Ideally you should get one, for fine adjustments. But its not necessary

i thought you needed one thats all. So i dont then ?

So i need the cam and all the gaskets needed to take the head off and on then ?

That about it ? my mate works at a garage so ill talk to him nicely about fitting it
