Going Forged On A VTR

  1. #1
    Hey guys.

Well my "budget" turbo build isnt going so budget anymore lol

Im after some forged internals, Pistons to be precise.

Just after abit of advice though.

First of all, i can only seem to find VTS forged pistons, no R ones, anyone know where i can get any, or shed any light on this??

Secondly, whats all this hi comp low comp stuff, bit of a noob on all this, so some info would be appreciated!

Also, will i need to bore it out at all?

    Thanks fellas!

I got forged pistons and rods for my 1.4 from GMC so I would suspect they can do you some VTR ones as well. Its worth a call at least.

i have been qouted 1200 supply and fit for the vtr. is that alot?
  7. #7
gmc do them as ax said, high comp highten the compression eg throttle bodies

low comp lower compression as the decomp plate would for boosted applications

500-550 for pistons 300 for rods means your getting charged 450 to fit so id say your getting your pants pulled down tbh....plus you normally get them a lil bit cheaper if you buy as a set instead of rods then pistons

Yeah i think ci does thr rods and pistons for around about £900 but i am not 100%
  10. #10
you want low comp pistons and steel rods. with some new bolts aswell maybe arp. also new piston rings if not supplied with your pistons which is another £80

    this will cost around £8-900

    fitting should be around £250

sump off, spark plugs out and do it from below

I got my rods and pistons from cituning for £900 when they were doing a special offer, however i waited 9 weeks for them, id go with gmc!!!!!!

    ring woosner also
  13. #13
wossner have good rep and actualy really competitive prices when compared, why not try ringing them and see how much theyll be and poss set up a group buy if theyre willing? may be a few ppl interested including me if we can get a good price, lots going boosted atm
  14. #14
I Paid £990 from cituning for my wossner rods and pistons, but customer service IS shit!!

good piece of kit there mate, should maybes have tried going direct though, im sure thyere doing the rods and pistons for 780 atm but i may be wrong on that, a mate priced some not long back but that may have been from somewhere else? or a deal hence my last post???? 780 seems very cheap to me???

wheres best place to get a 8v turbo manifold from? been looking on the net and can only find em for like £500 lol
  17. #17
ok yea they said it was 800 for the set and 400 fiting.
so if i wa to buy some i should ask if they come with the ring aswell...
how hard is it to diy? i wouldnt do it but my little mechanic friend might ha

thanks for all the info there guys, much appreciated

At the moment im thinking of just going for the pistons, no rods.

This was supposed to be a budget build but its just not going that way really, guess it never would of.

Really only going for the pistons to protect the engine if im honest, as ive heard and been told that running boost on standard pistons eventually buggers them, hence why im upgrading.

Internally i think ill be going for the forged low comp pistons and a turbo cam and hopefully be running around 10psi.

Is running rods aswell REALLY needed?? in all honesty...

if your buying pistons then you may aswell go for rods imo
  20. #20
i new that answer would come up lol

I would if i had the money, but as i said, this was ment to be a buget build but im going just a little further to try and keep the engine safe (forged and standalone)

Just wanting to no if you can run forged pistons on standard rods, should be ok really shudnt it?
  21. #21
you will be fine karl pistons be fine my mates has done a vtr turbo with forgies ill ask him on price and see what I can sort out for you via my usual contacts

    good stuff mate

Im sure i seen a second hand set on here, not sure if they wer VTS ones though...

If i use forged lowcomp pistons, do i still need a thicker HG ??

"Shit" and then some - i just bought a load of stuff, and Cituning gave me some very abrupt and uninformative answers by email when i was asking a few questions pre-purchase.Same when i then spoke to them direct.Despite this i decided to try to order with them, but on phoning them a few Saturdays ago the guy i needed to speak to was out and despite leaving my number they never even bothered to phone back to take my order.

Still, least i got a reply from them.Few others inc some sponsors on here didnt even reply.

No great loss - got a great deal with excellent service elswhere in the end

id say if your spending 500 on pistons, 300 for rods is a must imo, if the car throws a rod your 500 quid has just went down the drain and you still got a fooked engine, up to you as i dont know how reliable it would be without the rods? but they wouldnt need uprating if the stock ones could take boost soooooo? all things you need to think about really as its gonna be your money and your engine? considering forgies myself but i odnt think i can afford to budget that in atm, rather run the vtr till it bursts then 16v it
as for the h/g you wont need a thicker one but a decent mls one as standards can wear holes in them with boost over a period of time and then you into more troubles
  25. #25
Buying the pistons and rods will allow you to increase the boost past about 7psi, which, if your using something like a t25 is actuator pressure. ID advise doing the headbolts and the headgasket at the same time, and make sure you get the air going in the inlet as cool as possible. the cooler the air, the more psi you can use (within reason)

i will be looking into forged pistons and new rods soonish me thinks just save up a little longer be worth it in the long run

cituning-i bought my manifold from them, they cashed the cheque as they didnt have the faciltiy to take cards,6 weeks later i got me manifold,i had to keep ringing them as they couldnt keep there promises of letting me know whats happening.

had the mani on for a few months and the bracket cracked, phoned them up and they basicly couldnt give a toss.

phoned miltek direct, explained what happened and got a replacement downpip for fee.

i do not recomend anyone buy anything from cituning.
