GTI-6 brake setup?

  1. #1
What exactly do you need for this "upgrade" ?

If i go the scrapyard, will i just need to take the calipers? Then buy some good GTI-6 disks and pads brand new?

Or is there anything else i will need to get

    Thanks in advance

I think its also better to upgrade the master cylinder too

They have a 23mm one iirc

So the caliper, caliper carrier, and the master cylinder?

Anything else i may have missed off people? Its for a VTR aswell, this setup fit it?

    get a 266mm set up

less unsprung weight. = better gains for "performance" in terms of braking

    I thought the GTI-6 setup was 266mm?

Berlingo van have 266mm? What would i need to take off?
  8. #8
    Gti6 are 283mm
good chance to fit braided lines aswell
  9. #9
    Hmm so will get:

Calipers, caliper carrier, and master cylinder. Anyone know what i should be paying for them from a scrapyard?

    > Braided brake lines
    > Red stuff pads
    > drilled and grooved disks.

Should be a very good setup

What wheels you using? 283mm brakes won't go under VTR wheels.

Will i need the same bits as the GTI-6 yeah?

    Caliper, carrier and master cylinder?
  14. #14
red stuff pads are shit from what ive heard

    just get a 266mm set up, 206gti
  15. #15
you dnt need to upgrade the M/C some say its over kill im running 266 atm on standard M/C i have it to upgrade too if i need it.. so far i say i havent done but i might stick it on see how it feels.

caliper and carrier yeah.. caliper will need grinding a lil tho iirc.

i paid £50 for mine from a mates breakers yard, so might be a little more then that, and the dics and pads are in mint cond,

and as for the carrier, you will need to grind it down abit so it fits around the strut, not much, just a little trim off the end,

ow yeh, and i hope you havn't got vtr wheels, because heres gti-6 brakes under my S wheels,

Rather close if you ask me, about 2 - 3 mm off the weights on the wheels,

o0oo sorry fella,, just wanted to make sure you should be fine with 266mm then, but GTI-6 brakes arn't 266mm, there 283mm iirc

i am running a 266mm setup at the minite using andrew paige discs and standard mintex pads il be up grading the pads when i change to braided lines,an upgraded master cylinder on this setup may give its gains but it is fine without it as for red stuff pads they are ceramic and will kill your discs...on the other hand i am currently refurbing a 283mm gti-6 setup i have a 23mm mc,yellowstuff pads and maxtorque group-n discs which i will be fitting sometime in the beginging of 2010 if i fit it (all depends on the 266mm with the upgraded pads)

imo the 266mm setup is awesome for everyday road use and thats just with standard pads!!!

the standard brake are more than up to the job for everyday normal, fast and even the odd trackday.

    my set-up consists of:
rebuilt calipers all round properly cleaned and new seals
    standard qh discs
    mintex 1144's all round
    braided brake lines.
they are more than ample for what i use the car for atm and probably will remain to be.

i would only upgrade to a proper 4 piston set-up
  21. #21
anyone supply and fit this set up?
  22. #22
Im thinking of doing this. If i used the calipers and carriers from a 206gti, could i upgrade all 4 or just the front two? Obviously there would be modification of the front caliper but whats the story with the rear? Has anyone tried to upgrade the rear?
  23. #23
no need to upgrade the rear, better discs and pads maybe, but nothing else needed

a 266mm set up will save a bit of weight and wont lose much stopping power on the 283mm set up
  24. #24
So just the fronts and maybe some grooved discs and uprated pads on the rear?
  25. #25
get the fronts and yes use some goood discs and pads for the rear
  26. #26
i can supply the discs and pads
  27. #27
I could do with some pocket money before i even think about getting some discs and pads lol. Saving for xmas as i'm self employed! No holiday pay or jack shit!
  28. #28
Can the gti-6 setup be bought new and if so are you talking stupid money?

The later 206 GTI 180 283mm setup can be bought brand new from Pug... I'm sure I read it's about £80 a side for calipers and carriers. They are direct fit too - no grinding needed.

cheers ill have a look into 206 GTI 180 setup
  31. #31
I have standard vtr alloys so ive got no chance of fitting any bigger discs than 266mm! No chance lol.
  32. #32
One thing to remember when fitting the new callipers (I refer to the GTi6 283mm items.).

The calliper retaining bolts on the saxo are longer than the 306.. so you will either require washers to space your Saxo bolts out.. 2 washers per bolt therefore 8 washers (costs about 50p...)
or you will need the calliper retaining bolts from the 306 which are a direct replacement.

As for teh GTi180's brakes, no idea if the above needs done!!!

    Defo WORTH remembering.......

Yeah, I've heard a few people mention that. Did mine up nice and tight and I've not had any problems.

If they rattle or don't sound too clever under braking, it'd would be worth putting some washers between the caliper and bolt head.
