Cleaning up the 16v

  1. #1
Before I get the 16v fitted Im going to tart it all up. De-grease, paint block etc. Just a few questions:

From the people that have done this, any tips?
Painting block - In your opinion, best colour? paint? finish?
Is there anywhere else to get some new shiney nuts and bolts from?
Should I renew gaskets, seals? If so which ones?

Also I was peering down one of the exhaust ports and one of the valves seemed have a white coating on it. All the rest where blackish and looked like they had black grease round the valve seating. Anyone know what this could be?

All help appreciated Add your pics aswell

hammerite for the block just brush it on,
any good degreaser will work and a wire brush. maybe even a wire brush drill attachment like i did.
renew all gaskets and seals, replace cambelts water pumps tensioners etc.

Looks mint that like pal, gave me a few ideas. Think Im just going black for the block, just going to add some white touches.

I havnt took the head off, just all the aux. You think I should? Never done it before so not that confident although I do love getting stuck in ha. Might give it a shot, need a torque wrench first.

    Anyone else?

i would replace the head gasket and de gunk it, much easier out the car

haynes manual or guides on here will be your friend

Yeh Ive got the haynes manual. Might just give it a shot. Ive degreased it, sanded/wire brushed it down then painted the block matt black with heat resistant spray. Dont think the matt finish is a good choice, all the oil will show up?
