Important! : T3 Turbo question?

  1. #1
Guys need help i go ahead with putting my turbo on, on the 2nd Dec and have just found out the turbo i have is not a T2 but a T3 spec is below.

    -Model: Garrett/Airesearch TA0301 (T3 Series)
    -Compressor Trim: 50
    -Compressor Housing a/r: .42
    -Turbine Housing a/r: .48
    -Oil Cooled only

dose anyone know what they can boost to and weither it is a good turbo to use with the conversion, i have the same parts as a cituning stage 2 kit if that helps. also dose any one know what car has these standard and what BHP they are??

    thanks in advanced

not great turbos in the grand scheme of things..
used on fiesta rst and some escort rst.

it could produce descent power but id much rather use a gt series turbo like gt25/gt28 as these are roller bearing and will perform better.

hmm im sure the t3 t4 are bigger. would take more to spool up so will get lag. i was going to use one but thats what i was told. t2/25/28 are most popular for saxos.

t3 was not used on the fiesta or escort as standard, it was used on some cosworths.
if your manifold is meant for a t2 the t3 will not bolt straight on either.

t3 was used on escort rs turbos.
oil cooled on the series one and water cooled & oil cooled on the series 2.
t2 was used on fiesta rs turbos, as standard across the range.
t3 is a popular modification for fiesta rs turbos but was not standard ford fitment.

correct they are a bigger turbo and are an upgade for the fiesta and escort you can buy an adaptor to fit the turbo to a t2/25 manifold. a friend of mine had a escort rs turbo and he had a cosworth turbo fitted to it wich was the t3 the turbo was too big and the lag was crazy! he could floor it and drive like a normal car then it would just kick in with crazy power... it felt good but by time it kicked in he had seconds of boost then change gear.

the t3 was std on escorts t2 on fiesta oil cooled on the s1 and water and oil on the s2 it will be a bit laggy and will be like a boot up the arse when it comes on boost most likely destroying the gearbox quite quickly my s2 with a stg 3 was still is running a solid 15psi with no problems at all

thanks guys so in all its a good turbo for lag and then boost so if you like being kicked up the ares which i do lol any ideas as to what they spool at??

    thanks

The T3 wont be that cracking on low revs/boost, emphasised by it being an 8v. But it also depends how much boost you want to run, if your getting low comp pistons and some decent head bolts you'll be able to get quite a decent figure but without you wont be getting the full potential of having a T3.

    But if your not changing the internals and wanting to run 5-7psi your going to be getting the same power figures as a T25 (same psi) but its going to be spooling alot later as the differences are quite big even between the GT28 and the T3 and the T28 is a nice step up from the T25;

    GT28
    Compressor: Trim 62 A/R 0.60
    Turbine: Trim 76 A/R 0.86

    GT25
    Compressor: Trim 60 A/R 0.60
    Turbine: Trim 62 A/R 0.64

Basically a T3 will be fine but it might piss you off a bit at low revs, pulling out of junctions etc can be quite annoying if you have lag. But then you have a turbo bolted to your engine that can boost over 400bhp so you might want to play. You could make a hybrid if you can change the compressor wheel but not sure if they fit, not that clued up on chopping and changing.

over 400hp on a t3? i very much doubt it.

Not on the TU, but T3's in general are for power. They usually boost over 300 without breaking a sweat.

On an RB20DET the T3 starts boosting at 3000rpms and peaks at 4600rpm.

not really going to be laggy pulling out in first gear, there is a different driving style needed to drive a turbo engine effectively. for example using the right gear to keep out of the lag. on my old erst it ran 18psi on a t3 and i didnt really think it was laggy at all once i got used to driving it.

Hmmm a GT28RS annoys me over the N/A PH3'd engine I have. Might just be me thats not used to the throttle response.
