is it possible to remove the inners froma cat so in theory it could be a decat?ive heard of this done before but is it easily done or just bollocks that wont work?thanks
can you remove inners from cat converter?

-
#2i wouldnt like to due to the harmless materials inside - decats arent that expensive anyway.
IF you HAVE to do it make sure you wear a mask etc. -
#3theres harmfull materials inside? if did do it how do you get it apart anyway?
-
#4I've heard of people pushing a bar up into the CAT and bashing the hell out of it til all the inside bits falls out, it's like bits of honeycomb lol
-
#5haha.so by doing that ud get the same as a decat.would it sound like a decat or would it be shit ?
-
#6Erm, well in theory it removes what's restricting the flow, so you could possibly see a small gain, but you would be safer off with a de-cat, then at least you still have a CAT for MOT time
-
#7It would be a de cat obviously... but would be more restrive then a aftermarket one.
-
#8ah right.well its only a spare in the shed so thought id experiment.im running a sports cat atm and ive got a few spare exhaust bits so mite aswell.you cant take them apart tho can you?so its just smashing sumin down there to get the shit out.what is actually inside anyway?
-
#9It's like a honeycomb substance inside.
I assume it's job is to filter/dilute the fumes.
But yeah, if you have a spare one, try it, and let us know the difference
-
#10Blow torch?
-
#11As has been said, the cat contains a honeycombe like structure that is coated in certain substances (platinum being one of them) that convert the exhaust gases in to Nitrogen, Oxygen, Water and Carbon Dioxide. It also provides back pressure and reduces noise.
Even if it's a spare cat, you're better off buying a decat or removing the cat box and welding some pipe in it's place. -
#12OP, there's your answer right there^^^Quote:As has been said, the cat contains a honeycombe like structure that is coated in certain substances (platinum being one of them) that convert the exhaust gases in to Nitrogen, Oxygen, Water and Carbon Dioxide. And btw, do not go near your CAT with a blow torch................. -
#13yeh.but if i was to remove the inside bits.all this scientific words make the insides sound abit harmful ha.so im having second thoughts now
-
#14as long as you use a mask and goggles and gloves (mabe chemical suit) you'll be fine

Ive heard of people sawing it in half and taking some of the honneycomb out to make it more of a sport cat then welding it back together. -
#15i smashed the crap out of the one on my old corsa till it was empty started it up and it sounded shit! is your on the mani or underneath? would be alot better just to cut it out sleve another pipe over it and weld it up. thats what i did and was alot better.
-
#16cost me 35 quid for a full stainless hand made decat just buy one dude and keep ur cat for ur mot's !!!!
-
#17haha.ive just done it.found some old mx handlebars in the shed so rammed it into the cat and got rid of all the shit inside.now its hollow.fitted it onto the car and fuck is it loud with the 3 inch cherry bomb backbox.willget a vid up shortly of it but if you cant afford a decat get the insides out of the standard cat.works and doesnt sound like pants
-
#18haha class

Will look forward to vids
-
#19indeed how do i get the vids to show on the page then?
-
#20fairenough everyone likes money saving mods
but now u gotta buy a cat for mot and there alot more expensive
-
#21
-
#22ah right ok then.im already a member of there so il jst do it
-
#23Lols looking forward to hearing this
-
#24haha mad.will be with you in 15 mins people
-
#26haha now it sounds more crisp and raspier in person but the poor mike quality makes it sound abit lower pitched
-
#28i done mine like this and it sounded like a tank where the gases rattle inside. Buy a decat.
-
#29ah right well mine doesnt rattle.so its ok
-
#30Mine never rattled and sound much nicer than the proper magnex decat I used to have. Not as raspy and deeper.
If you read the informetion on the GMC website, it actually states that its better to keep a box in the system rather than running a straight through pipe from manifold to backbox. Something to do with resonance iirc.1 user thanked this post: -
#31oh.i dno.im not intending on keeping this decat on anyways
-
#32I have a Cat Manifold on my car, but it's got nothing inside it because I took the cat out due to my dippy mate shooting Air Rifle Pellets inside it.
It sounds really nice, dosen't sound bad and I did get a Gain in low end power and it backfires in this cold weather too, sounds great
-
#33Sounds interesting tbh.Quote:Mine never rattled and sound much nicer than the proper magnex decat I used to have. Not as raspy and deeper.

luke_freeride is your cat under your car or in the manifold
I might consider actually doing this because atm i am very skint
-
#34hey ant809099: yes its under the car,i just got an old set of mx bars and wacked the hell out of it then just kept shining a torch in there to check everythings out.youll have like a silver powder coming out.but keep smashig inside untill everythings out.then i ran a jet wash through it and its spanking inside now.

#36Here you go
-
#37cats are worth money at scrappies anyway......so buy a decat pipe then sell your cat to the scrappies and make your money back.......
