#4As long as you buy a VTR setup made between 98 and early 2000 (with a single plug ECU) youll be fine mate. Its just a case of taking the old unit out, putting the 1600 in and plumbing everything in. The wiring loom will clip straight in, as long as you buy the correct setup.
To ensure its perfect, get one from the same registration or year as yours.
As mentioned above, the VTR ECU will need to be unlocked. If the engine you buy is still in a car when your discussing the purchase of it, get the owner to start the engine and remove the immobilser box behind the glove box (its a black box the size of a 20 pack of fags), this unlocks the ECU. If this isnt possible, get him/her to send you the immobilser box, pickup ring and key with the ECU. You can then fit these to your car during the conversion so the engine believes its still in the old car. Once its running, remove the immobilser box and replace it with your 1400 one, you can then use your key from then on.
Its also a good idea to get the VTR gearbox too, and youll want VTR/VTS/106 GTi/Rallye 1.6 driveshafts too as the 1400 ones are hollow and will snap. -
