1.1 to 1.4 Engine Job...??

  1. #1
right guys dunno if any of you guys have done this but....

im planning on buying a mk2 1.4 engine to place into my mk1 1.1,

anythings i should consider other than the obvious like gear box, brakes, etc....??

any diff from mk1 to mk2?

also the engine i am buying comes without gear box, i have been told 1.1 and 1.4 gear box's are the same.... so it hopefully bolt straight to my 1.1 gearbox, and with the current ratio it shud give me quite rapid accleration for a 1.4.... true?? also it will kill the top end wont it?

any other things to think about....?

    cheers in advance guys....!

lol, stick to a mk1 1.4 engine - trust me.

If your going for a conversion, thought about a mk1 vtr engine? You'll have more power for the effort of changing an engine over?

    and they look identicle

im mainly changing the engine to high miles on my current rig.... 112k...!

and with it being first year insurance, 1.4 makes no diff with my insurance i checked, so could declare it and piss laffin....

dont mind the effort, and i know a mk2 going at the right price.... quite decent miles 2....

As said it is easier to get an engine the same age as the one being replaced mainly because of the wiring differences. Get a MK1 engine for a MK1 car it will plug and play, MK2 and your looking at hours spent with a multimeter wiring the whole car up or alternatively swapping all the sensors.

so even if i get the wiring loom and the digital clocks clocks from the mk 2 its still gonna be a multi metter and cofeeee jobeeee? lol

It will be mate yeah. Truly and honestly, its really, really not worth the hassle.

The gearbox will fit fine, and the internals are of the same strength yes so theres no problem using your 1.1 box, which as you say will improve acceleration. I wouldnt worry about your top end diminishing, as the engine wont get you there on either box anyway.

Id recommend the vented brake setup for the front. The solid disks you have are very prone to warping, and because your cars 3 stud theyre also extremely expensive for what they are and actually cost more than brand new OEM VTS disks. A front brake setup consisting of second hand calipers and carriers with used disks and pads (this is the perfect time to buy uprated versions of these also), from a Furio/Westcoast/VTR/VTS/106 GTi/106 Rallye and a few other models will set you back around £30-40.

Even better 266mm and 283mm setups are around the £100 mark each, which is still pretty reasonable.

thanks for the profesional advice pal, if i ws to change all the front breaking system, would that meen having to use 4 stud alloys?

and also was that price for just one side?

    many thanks

i would think so yes, as you can't take the hubs out of the strut, and the mountings are different for the brake calipers on 1.1's

correct me if im wrong though!

second hand brakes shouldnt cost you more than £50 and then simply get a secondhand set of struts with the hubs etc included £50-£80 think they should bolt straight on to
  11. #11
yea u would need 4 stud wheels either alloys or steels, only problem with upgrading the front brakes your gonna have to change the rear beam to a 4 stud one but this could be a good thing because you can convert to discs, you could leave the 3 stud beam on but unless your having steels you'll have odd alloys (3 stud on back 4 stud on front)

Surely it'd just be easier to buy a 1.4 car?
  13. #13
well you dont have to upgrade brakes you could get a whole engine for like £50 and could fit it your self as long as you got the right year so it could be worth it just depends how much u wanna change

mate to be honest with ya pal, i a student at uni and still havent recieved my student finance after applying in may!!! ... wankers..... lol!!

so buying a 1.4 isnt really an option....

ok have a 1.4 mk1 furio engine lined up... wile its out i plan to change the clutch.... anything else i should be thinking about changing due to the ammount of miles the car has done....112k?? lnot just not but say in 20 or 30,000 miles time? which is likely to go?
  15. #15
while its off for the sake of £60 you could fit an entrie set of new inlet/head and exhaust manifold gaskets and some new head bolts and a new oil filter/water pump/cambelt etc i got all that for around £60 off eGay

yeah true, i was thinking about the drive shaft's and things like that?

within the next 20 to 30 k miles which will require a change due to the current 112k which the car has done....

with drive shafts you just need to feel them and see if they are smooth or not at the end of the day drive shafts are easy to replace with or with out the engine in, the engine will have to be fitted in order to fit them anyway, other things like hubs again just spin it and if it makes a noise and isnt very smooth then when you replace them you can upgrade with 4 stud ones and the dampers just push down on the car and if it takes longer than 2 bounces then replace the shocks aswell, brake pads (well thats easy to check lol) the discs just feel for any pitting/grooves etc

if i was doing this id just check out breaking vtr/vts/gti's on ebay and get the entire front struts (hubs, shocks, springs, top mounts, caliper with pads, discs) and bobs your uncle job done and they would be relatively cheap obviously just make sure the struts are in good condition and probably best to pick them up to check for your self
