Hi there im going to tap into the pos and neg from the cigerette lighter to wire up some neons. Which cables from the back of the lighter port is pos and neg?

I think its the orange that pos and the brown thats neg. However correct me if im wrong

Thanks doing it today so need to know soon as

    Use a multimeter mate
  3. #3
i used a voltage probe and the croc clip snapped so cant tell i think when i put the probe on the orange it lit up and the brown is always to my knowledge been the neg.

    Are they not all standard?

and how do you remove the cig lighter port its so tight in and cable are hard to get to.

If not ill probs go from the sterio 12v feed and neg feed. Didnt want to really as it clogs everything

    Thanks

Yellow and Green negative? Thats strange.

yel/green im sure would have been an earth, you could have had an earthing fault leading on a voltage from the cigar lighter?

the only reason it would need an earth is because its got a metal casing.

Dont jump ahead yet, start your car, get near the wiring when its plugged into the cigar lighter and press it to make it heat up the lighter, if you get a reading over your 2 cables o and b at i think 12v - then thats your wires.

Remember to put it to the right voltage type, its coming from a car battery, therefore its DC 20v you need to put it in as

yel/green should never be an negitive

hmmm a lot wires which are yellow and green are earths tbh, especially on the engine, only other colour is black

on the cig lighter though yellow and green is the earth

well wired the neg of the lights to the yellow and green cable and wired the pos cable to the switch and from the switch to the orange cable which was the pos.

Nothing has gone wrong and lights tun on and off fine with no sparks or probs so the yellow and green cable must be fine as an earth!

tbh there only small low volt washer led's so they wont pull through much if it was anything more heavy duty i wouldnt have bothered lol

Would it not be simpler to get a plug from a motor factors put your neon wires into it then just plug into the cigar lighter socket?

    Steve.

no tried that before had a four way version and it clogs everything up and its the constant unplug and plug in and looks tacky
  13. #13
ill go take a photo of my neons now for you and how i wired em up
  14. #14
Right this is how i have mine set up and it works lol

cut the plugs off hte back, had a grey wire, yellow and a brown so i started poking around...

best way it worked for me in the end was like this....

So what do you do for a cig lighter now? and those wires look really loose mate. All i did with a wire stripper is cut a bit of the cable back and tapped the new cable to it then soldered it to the new cable and electritions taped it. Never liked chocolate boxes dont trust them.

Then went from there to the neons but half way through the pos cable i cut it again and put a switch so that i could control when the went on and off

it just unhooked the wires to take photo, dont seem them as they all tucked up on lil hook thingys

cigarette light never worked anyway but i always carry around my patriotic clipper with a welsh flag on it so im good

your neon will be on all the time do u kno that?

I have these wired up with ma lights but it has a control box to turn them on so i hardly use them.

I was thinking abt trying to wire them up with my interior light so that when i open door they come on. Thought it would look better during thew winter lol
Would this be possible and how?

Easy done mate i did the same for an alarm, door when i open the door with the alarm on it goes off.

All you need to do it tap a wire from your pos cable going to your neons then on the other side tap ot to the "PINK" cable on the door switch. This pink wire is wired to your interior light thats why it comes on wen you open the door. so the same will happen to your neons. the only thing is if you want them on when your in the car with the door closed your stuffed lol:
