OIL Filter Stuck

   Hi,
   
   Yesterday, I tried to change the oil on my car. I bough Draper 77584 Oil Filter Wrench and tried to remove the oil filter but invain. I have drained the old engine oil already so put the new oil in and leave the oil filter as it is.There are lot of mark and deep scrathes on the attached existing filter. I have two questions now
   1) How can i remove the stuck filter? i could not hold the grip on filter using wrench and it slipped always. i am trying from near the seal area.
   2) as there are deep scrathes on the existing filter and i have added new oil in. Will it impact worse on engine due to deep scrathes on filter? could i drive the car as it is?

   as long as it isnt leaking, would say its still ok to use but not 100%. you shouldve just persisted with getting it off though as its much better to change the filter aswell. have you got a chain wrench or a strap one? i had a problem where i didnt have a wrench big enough to get off a huge oil filter so ended up stabbing a hole through it with a screwdriver and spinning it off. (oil bloody everywhere lol)

   the wrench things never seem to work for me, i just hammer a strong screwdriver thro it, then tap the handle turn to loosern it, then pull the screw driver out and spin off.

   if i get a stuck filter i hammer a screwdriver through it and lever it off
   
   that cant slip round the outside of it lol

   Mine came off with my hands And put back on with my hands.. And no im not a meat head.

   all depends on how longs its been on for, but normally after ive put one on with my hands, i cant get it off with my hands again, but i go mad tight as they always end up leakin lol

   Ahh. But surely if they're changed every service interval, like they should. They should be fine?

   I use a filter strapp, but if that fails i use the trusty hammer & screwdriver
   
   An when i refit my new filert i allways put a bit of oil on the rubber seal...

    Thanks all for your comments. I have the chain one. Last time my car get service six months ago and now its done nearly 10K millege. filter was definately changed at that time. I am applying the chain wrench on the base near the ring. is this the place where to apply power to remove it or other end? As its slipping so i am thinking to put some dry sand around it. As its winter and snow so may be its slipping due to frost or watery. What do you think that how long can i run with the existing oil filter?

    put the chain on tighter, crush the filter and undo it. (anti-clockwise)
    
    if not the above screwdriver method never fails

    ye, dont let it win you over. goin to take it off sometime. stab a screwdriver through it and use it as a lever to spin it off
    
    or squeeze the chain wrench tighter as said so it crushes it

    I wrapped the filter in sandpaper, then wore a glove with grip. A bit of force then hey presto! Screwdriver method is also good.

    i use the strap type remover with ratchet, never failed me yet!!!!

    ive never used a chain or strap. good old screwdriver and brute strength.

    Thanks All. Finally i am able to remove this. i have used the strap wretch ( Drapper £4.50) and it squeezed the filter near to crush and it rotates luckily. If it didn't work then i will use the screwdriver solution. many thanks to all. your advice really gives me the motivation to do this work and helped me a lot.
    
    My experience with the chain wrentch is awfull and i will never ever recomend to use it for this purpose (always slipping on filter). strap ones are best as it grips strongly on filter but require patience to remove.

    Now i have another problem. I would like to change spark plugs and air filter.
    
    Spark plugs seems to be very tight on my car. Is there any way i could sure that it will not break spark plugs while applying pressure on it to remove. I have the correct tool for this job (appropriate socket wrench, spanner and bending rotating middle part). Any recomendations before i do the job?
    
    Secondly on my air filter i have 5 hex screws, when i have tried the third screw with the correct hex screwdrive it rouded off the screw. How could i remove the screw now? is there any safe way without doing further damage?

    to make it easier take the plugs out wen engine is cool or cold as the head and plug will swell slightly wen its hot which will cause a possible failure on the plug and for the hex screw get a torx bit the same size hammer it into the bolt head and presto !!!
