Vts turbo internals querie??

  1. #1
What sort of psi could you run a vts with forged pistons and rods?? And what sort of power would it be?
Whats a good set to get with the likes of wossenor, accralite, etc or are they pretty much all be the same?
  2. #2
lol... what turbo? the turbo will be the thing that will limit your boost.
  3. #3
Isn't Colin's 106 running over 400bhp through forged pistons and otherwise standard bottom end? And pushing around 20psi?

yes, but i believe its a blueprinted engine wich will make a difference.

he is also going to wind on more boost soon, around 30psi..

im sure deans car was running at around 28psi.

The latest one is blueprinted iirc, but unnsure if thats a fresh build or the one currently in the car lol

oh yes thats right, the old one was a built engine but not BP. his old car was boosting to 20 odd psi though.

his old engine was 140k bottom end with some forged pistons thrown in i do believe.

He was running 26 psi and 303 @ wheels then the turbo went bang. Then he was seeing 354 @ wheels on 22 psi i think and a diff turbo then it chucked a rod out the back of the block due to a rod bolt snapping.

If your looking for forged rods i have a set in my garage

Ive been thinking of getting a t2 or gt28r. Ive been told a gt28r would be very good for my vts turbo and with it having water cooling too.

Ive though about just fitting pistons to lower the compression with using a decomp and running like 8-9psi.

Si ran 1.4 bar on the standard inlet with no problem. I think it very much mappers on how well it is setup. My old car literally incinerated its air filter when it was not running quite right.
  10. #10
Well im going to be using the pred ecu so will be mapped by the guy there and know hes very good.
  11. #11
Wouldn't have thought you'll be needing low comp pistons and a decompression plate. Go for one or the other (pistons would be preferable) and you should have no issues with 9psi.
  12. #12
i used omega low com pistons and a ferriday copper decom plate and it wasnt that good off boost as the comp was way too low

that was on a vtr and made 154bhp@wheels on a t2/t25 running 14psi
  13. #13
Well im going to use decomp or low comp pistons if can get afford at the time.
  14. #14
just buy forged pistons, saves you buying twice and you will need forgies when you want to up the boost as many people say boost is addictive.

Colins old engine had done 126k. We fitted Wiseco low comp forged pistons, new big end bearings and new standard rod bolts. The standard rod bolts probably would have been ok if we had changed them ever year. They lasted 2 and a half years so not bad for a standard component. Now we would say every year or 5k miles for standard rod bolt on 250hp+.

+1 to this... a t2 or a gt28? bit of a difference in turbos mate? you sure thats not a t2 or a t28? all 3 would run very well but it just depends on you goals... just wasnt sure as theres a HELL of a difference between the t2 and gt28
  17. #17
gt28 could be a bit laggy

Was also thinking this! Big cost difference as well!

GT28's can work well. T28 would be laggy as hell though lol
  20. #20
as above the gt28 is meant to work well on the gti so be rather absurd if it didnt do well on the vts lmao, as said though very expensive, second hand is like £800 for a decent example, thinking of the gt25 for my vtr found a one for 400 the other week but im very skint lmao, will see how my recent purchase pans out first
  21. #21
Works well with the DP manifold anyway...
  22. #22
this the gt 28 or 25?
  23. #23
    28 sorry.
  24. #24
I know a kid with a with a white 106 gti, it was at fcs last year it also went to trax!!!

He was running 7psi on standard rods & pistons with a td04 turbo, an he had problems what so ever...

I think rods are good for 250-270 bhp...
  25. #25
Standard rods can take some serious abuse! Rods bolts are a good thing to upgrade though.

I look at it this way. If a company such as Cituning sell a kit off the shelf which uses standard internals (all be it at low boost = 6-8psi), then the standard items will be fine at such levels. They wouldn't sell the kits if it blew engines apart as it would cause them untold grief. However, the temptation will be to up the boost once you get used to it, which can then lead to problems.

J4 internals are very solid as said, cant remember his name was but theres a professional engine builder in the southwest whos worked on more TU engines than he can count, said they have the most solid bottom end he's ever seen in the engine class.

The bolts are a weakness as said though, and youll still benefit from low comp forged pistons. Some people get the std J4 rods shot peened too for a bit of peace of mind.
  27. #27
Few tuners have questioned whether shot-peening is worth it though for the money - may as well put the cash towards forged rods if you are in any way worried.
  28. #28
Aye. One of those things where you move up the list of options to the best one, which ends up adding another £500 to your spec list lol. Buy cheap/ buy twice and all that though
  29. #29
Well someone i know told me best would be to go for would be gt28r off 200sx as its water cooled too or i was thinking of going for same turbo as citiuning kit.
He knows a hell of alot about cars, etc as has the fastest recorded del sol in the uk running 360bhp and uping it too 400 soon. Hes helped me alot on info side of things, etc.
