my mate has one for sale and i need a new box on my vts , are they better than a vts one , would it be a good purchase . wots the life expentancy , are the ratios the same etc , would it affect top speed and acceleration , sorry for all the questions
106 rallye gearbox on a vts

#2yes the top speed would be affect... but when do you use your top end... the acceleration is greatly improved there awesome bits of kit i would get one
-
#3where have all these rallye gearbox threads come from ?!
-
#4Are you refering to an S1 Rallye box or S2 Rallye box? The final drive on the S1 box is much higher than the original VTS final drive. The S2 Rallye box sits nearer the VTS final drive.
Both would make a difference in acceleration, S1 box being much more noticable. And yeah you would loose top end with both, again much more with the S1 box. -
#6thanks for the replys . tbh acceleration to me is a bit more important . he has a mk1 westcoast. so im guessing that its a s1 , not sure if the s2 fits on the mk1 westcoast???
would it be better on the fuel comsumption sides of it , what sort of mph would i lose??

#7s1 and s2 bos would fit on a mk1 Westcoast.Quote:thanks for the replys . tbh acceleration to me is a bit more important . he has a mk1 westcoast. so im guessing that its a s1 , not sure if the s2 fits on the mk1 westcoast???

Fuel consumption would depend on how you drive (rpm wise and how heavy your right foot is)
s1 would top out around 130 iirc right on the limiter (without looking around for a more accurate answer) -
#8Your MPG will suffer even if your driving style remains the same due to the higher revs. As the final drive is higher, this means your revs will be higher in each gear.
My GTi is now running an S1 Rallye box. I have to remain at 60MPH to get fair MPG on the motorway. An S2 Rallye box wouldnt be as bad in terms of MPG.
By S1 and S2 I was refering to the MK1 and MK2 106 Rallyes. MK1 Rallye runs a much higher FD'ed box. The MK2 Rallye has the box thats similar to the VTS box (again in terms of FD (only just slightly higher)).
Look at it this way, all the boxes on the 106s/Saxos are interchangable. But each box from each car can have difference characteristics depending on its model. -
#9ok so there are benifits from this box , as it stands motorway mpg on my vts isnt tooo shabby. i mite just get another vts box as im happy with acceleration and top speed mpg etc . but the rallye box is a great advantage/mod/ to increase my acceleration . always a good thing to do for a bit more umphhh off the mark
wot do u guys think i should do ? thnks guys

#10Being totally honest from what Ive noticed the S1 Rallye box does feel different. But I think there is only a small amount of difference in it compared to a VTS box.
One thing with the S1 box is due to the revs being higher in each gear, its obviously more noisey, hence why it may feel even quicker than it really is? Bit long winded that but it does make sense lol.
The VTS box is the best of both worlds IMO. If you want a change go for an S2 Rallye box, you will see a very marginal difference. If you have your heart set on the S1 Rallye box then go for it I say!1 user thanked this post: -
#11wicked mate thanksfor the help muuuchhhooo appreciated . i will ask my mate if it is a s2 box as im not too sure . if it is then happy days

just a quick question , my gearbox sounds a little ill
when driving in the first few gears if i let my foot off the accelerator and just letting it drive ... no accelerator , cluth released etc.. . it sound like theres loose components in the box??? like a grinding noise . and also when changing from second to third at high revs it grinds and then pops into gear very quickly . any ideas what this could be ?? thanks
-
#12Before you fork any cash over Id definatly check the gearbox code and make sure it tallies up with the codes for the S2 rallye box.
I could easily sell you a 1.1 box and "tell you" its a Rallye gerabox. Definatly research the box first and make sure as best as possible your not buying a dud.
With regards to your current one, Im not too technially minded with these sort of things. Best to get the pro's in here (not those kinda pro's lol!) -
#13yeah i will definately do that, he works at pugperformance . soo im preety sure that its true , can never be too sure imo. thanks for your help . anyone else have an idea why my box is being gay?
-
#14could be a number of things, syncho worn, wear on the teeth, a shim or something come out . . . . etc.Quote:wicked mate thanksfor the help muuuchhhooo appreciated . i will ask my mate if it is a s2 box as im not too sure . if it is then happy days

#20I am running an S1 Box on my S and there is such a difference! Be prepared to suffer MPG wise though. 70mph sits at 4k revs in 5th. Best mod i've done though tbh.
