resetting ecu

hello there is there any way to reset the ecu without having it plugged into a diagnostic machine? ive heard unplugging your battery overnight may also reset it?
    Thanksn

Unplug the battery for an hour. Then you should go out and work through the revs concentrating on 2000 to 4000rpm so the ECU will "learn" the best settings for the car... I think lol

Unplug the battery over night and the ECU will clear the error log.

nice 1, ive just got a new lambda sensor as 1 of the wires on it was snapped with the chunks of ice on the road, put it in and the lights still on but ive been told by gmc that it needs the codes clearing

It doesn't always. I could leave mine off for over a week and nothing would happen. In the end I just bought a diagnostics cable so I could link my laptop up to my ecu. Was fine then...

how did you link it up? did u have to use a program on the laptop?

Yeah I got it with the cable, there are many programs out there though. Really easy to use, plus you can use it for proper diagnostics, like checking sensor values, air to fuel mix etc.

    I've got this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Elm327-Elm-327...item33591703ee

But I only paid around £20 delivered for it. Its an ELM one and came with software although there are quite a few out there. Worth while investment though...

can you reset lights for abs airbag etc
  12. #12
yeah you can clear all lights on the dash board, but that doesn't mean that when you turn them off they won't come back on again. Say for example you havn't got an airbag connected the light will still come on when you reset it.

But say the Engine Management Light is on, you fix the problem. Reset the codes on the ECU with said cable and software it will then go off. It is good though if you know how to use it properly and you know what sensor readings should be.

can you use it to reset the abs light codes?

I have just replaced my lamda sensor after having a decat fitted I bought a cat and one catalytic fault code was still showing up. After driving around for a week the fault was still logged and wouldnt delete so bought a new lambda, now the lights gone out and fault cleared but it took around 4 days to go out. Apparantly it has to have so many cycles of warming up and cooling down(fully) before it goes out. So I wouldnt go splashing the cash as of yet, be patient, it will go out.
