Important! : Diff Question

  1. #1
Hi, i was in the snow yesterday and like usual the car got stuck, i noticed the drivers side wheel only span a bit then stopped as the passengers wheel continued to spin.

Now is it meant to do that as i thought that the drivers wheel would have span as it seemed to have more traction. or is it a drive shaft or gearbox problem?

    Thank You

That is normal. The car has a open diff

It's a full box apart job. Whilst you've got it apart, worth upgrading the input shaft bearing as the standard one can melt when the cars used at high rpm for a while (its got a plastic middle) - uprated one is metal.

Then you need to get the crownwhel switched over from the standard diff onto the quaife, quaife can do this for you.

Then put it all back together.

Whislt it's apart worth checking the wear on the synchro's and replace the seals and maybe the other bearings. Good time to replace the synchro rings if need be, and refurb the synchros with new springs, bearings and sliders.

I'm going to be putting a quaife in my S1 box asap - waiting on the diff to come now from rallydesign, then it's go go go !! Then will get it on and sell my S2 box.

Gripper also do diffs for the ma boxes but that is as much as i know on the matter

I'm happy to be corrected here:

I think the gripper diffs need to setup, preloaded and backlash? So you want to make sure someone who knows their stuff to set the diff up. Also they are a plate diff so will need the plate changing at sone point in their life, I'm not sure on rough mileage figures -I suppose it'd depend on the aggresivness of the driving it was subject to. They are an LSD

The quaifes are an ATB, have a lifetime guarantee and don't have parts that wear out per se as they use gears to work. Good bit about them on the quaife website for anyone that's interested
