Been through flood.

    Hey.

Yesterday i went through a flood and car stopped. Was pulled out and now have the car back at home.

It struggles to get going, but after several turns of the ignition and abit of waiting (30secs) i got it going. Although it didn't sound very healthy. (Very chokey)

I checked oil level and its about an inch above the MAX (Water got in?)

I don't know if i should change the oil myself, and try and fix it myself, Or whether im better off just getting it to a garage.

I don't really know what could be the extent of the damage.

The car was probably only running for about 60seconds before i turned it off again, as i didn't want water getting into the engine from the oil.

    Need some advice

    thanks

If the engines fucked, its fucked. Drain the oil out, put new cheap gear in and try running it. Chances are if it got that flooded then its maybe sooked in a bit of water. Once youve changed the oil, do a compression test and see if anythings untoward.
  3. #3
    Ok thanks for advice.

Not sure i could do that myself, but ill ask some mates see if they'd know how to.

And if i did take it to a garage, and thats all that would need doing, know the rough estimate of cost?
  4. #4
    where are you from?
Water in the oil is very bad. Especially if there is a ltr of water mixed in. I would be concerned if any water got sucked in through the throttle body into the engine.
Chances are you have damaged some of the electrics or knocked a plug off

    From suffolk, uk.

And alright, ill just get it into a garage tomorow and see the likely cost of the repair.

Although if its likely to be near to the value of the car, then idk :/
  6. #6
well really lots of water in the engine is game over
  7. #7
Ok well there shouldnt be too much water in the engine.
  8. #8
well if its showing an inch up the dipstick then there is loads in the engine. Just do not start it
  9. #9
Yeah, might be more than an Inch but theres alot in there ;/.

The recovery guy also unscrewed the cap to the engine, and said the creamy color of the oil shows waters got in and mixed with it.

Looks like i might have to sell it off as scrap then.

well an engine is very cheap to pick up
just get it drained and flushed and see what happens

  13. #13
I don't mean a 'new' engine btw, just a working engine. (incase i mislead)
  14. #14
Dam, annoying a cant edit my posts.

And thanks, ill take a look on ebay now.
  15. #15
used 1.1 engine on here would be between £30-70
  16. #16
if your feeling adventurous, a vtr 1.6 engine sells for bloody cheap these days. im sure people on here would be willing to change your engine
  17. #17
    That's awesome!

I thought it would be like £500+

Labor to fit an engine would be a far amount though.

Thanks for help so far! Really apprechiate it.

And yeah, i was just thinking i could upgrade slightly LSO.

I'll need 100 posts to get into the market section.
  18. #18
i charge £250 to fit an engine. do it in a day drive in drive out job. you can buy premium membership to access for sale section.
Alot of vtr engines sell well under £100
  19. #19
A VTR / VTS would put my insurance up alot though?

For the £250 jobs, how far away would you be happy to drive to the place?
  20. #20

Ok, Well im going to pay like £50 for an assessment tomorow anyway. And if they either say i need a new engine, or that they'll charge me a few hundred in costs to fix the existing engine. Ill just get a new engine in.

Once i've done that ill PM you three and find out exact costs and details
  29. #29

    Quick update:

Took it to a guy, He says one of the rods / valves in the engine has been bent/snapped. Said it'll need a new engine.

Also, he noticed the dash board rev counter isn't working. That an easy fix?

Im awaiting a quote from him for a new engine installation, and will see what he says.
  42. #42
Thats not good news The rev counter could be a knocked plug or something
  43. #43
Yeah i know, But i was kind of expecting it :/.

When the car had was working well, it was worth just over £1,000. Think it's worth getting it fixed and be done with, or possibly getting a new saxo?
  44. #44
depends if you can get an engine and it fitted all for a good price
  45. #45
Will probably somewhere around £500 for everything.
  46. #46
where about u from im in woolpit every weekend? could have a look?
