Painting steel wheels + hammerite

  1. #1
My wheels were properly prepd last time i sprayed them, I bought back the steel wheel to a shine, then a few coats of primer and worked on from there.

I completed them and laqured them but never allowed the laqure to dry for a few days before using them, i sprayed them in the morning and used the wheels that night, so insistently going 70MPH down the motorway, the laqure had flung off and then the snow and salt has came, its made them go a bit rusty so today i started again.

This time instead of spraying a white lip around the edge, i'm going to paint it on with hammerite. It will be easier and if the white lip gets damaged it can get touched up.

My question is.... Do i lacquer the wheels once the black paint on the wheel and the white lip is on.

Or, do i lacquer the wheels just which are currently just black (middle) painted and then hammerite on top of that

I've got 3 good coats of primer, 3 good coats of black spray and i'll add 3 thick layers of hammerite white paint?

    ok.

I'm just about to apply the 5th and final coat to all 4 wheels.

It says you can add another coat in 4 hour intervals.

I've been applying coats around every 4 hours or more.

I'll apply the final coat, then leave it top go hard over night

Touch up some parts of the wheel where i managed to be messy with the paint brush (Thats what happens if you talk to a mate while trying to concentrate)

In the morning a nice thin coat of laqure, and several more through out the day?

So on Friday, they'll be ready to fit?

Btw, i'm really pleased how the hammerite stays on, nice and smooth and VERY water resistant, Its not even coming off my paint brush.

I'll get picsa up once done!

Word of warning, I laquered Hammerite when I tidied up my suspension and the laquer reacted with the Hammerite and melted it, even after the Hammerite was left in the airing cupboard for a week to dry.

As you can see, the tyre pen has worn off, not surprised the amount of gritters about and rain we've had.
