Car starts then cuts out.

   On the way back from my mums, car just went all strange, going nowhere, 2nd/3rd gear with loads of revs and was doing literally 5-10mph.
   
   Managed to get to my house, go to start it, starts for about 3 seconds then just cuts off....
   
   Any ideas?!

   no engine management light come on or anything?

   It could be the idle speed control valve
