Car wont start!!!!!

  1. #1
drove car to work today, all was hunky dory! finish work 4pm as normal jump in car to drive home turn the key...... and nothing! all the clicking happens as normal. So jump out car. Whip of coilpack, take out all spark plugs and notice none have any petrol on them!(also changed them while i was there as i had a new set in the boot!) so obviously there is no fuel getting to the spark plugs. any ideas as i coudn't really do much with limited tools that i had, and light was against me. What are the first things to check, obviously i thought about fuel pump check that. but any thing else to look out for? as there didnt seem to be any leakages any where around the car and i do have half a tank of go go juice in the tank!

    many thanks,

    Bill.

    Thanks,

    Bill

if its clicking the battery mite be flat and if thats the case the fuel pump wont work as its not gettin enough power to run it

The only way really is to just replace the fuel filter.

Fuel cutoff is a red switch/button in the engine - just press it.

Like is said above, the battery could be completely flat. Put the battery on charge over night or buy a new one. Can test the battery voltage with a multimeter to see if it's flat or not

no battery isnt flat! tested with multi meter. first thing i done as i am a sparkie by trade lol. but my second problem is now i have to try and get the car home! its stuck in seven oaks and i live in ashford! 40 min drive! anyone have any ideas how to get it home without spending too much! i can get hold of a tow bar but cant get hold of a tow bar or a tow vehicle. i can get it home for 50quid ish by family friend but he cant get it home untill sunday mourning! any other ideas? and i not with AA yet altho i am joining when i get my next pay cheque lol!

Have you check the fuel pump relay? Can you here the fuel pump pressurize under the rear seats when you turn the ignition on? Its alot of money for a tow home when it could be as simple as a £3 relay...
  10. #10
yea can hear pump priming so dont think its pump, but good shout mate! thats whats really throwing me out as i have changed the spark plugs can hear fuel pump priming, starter motor turning and i am assuming there is a spark but the only thing t5hat isnt getting through is the fuel! any one have any photo's of the fuel runs? maybe this is my next check after the fuel cut off switch. and then change fuel filter?
  11. #11
It might not be the fuel pump. When you turn the ignotion to the stage before starting the engine you should be able to hear a whining- this is the fuel pump pushing fuel to the engine. If you hear this then it isnt that.

If it jus clicks when you turn the car then it could be the starter motor.
  12. #12
must have posted at the same time then lol. If fuel is getting up and the starter motor is turning and the sparks are sparking, then it could be a blocked fuel rail?

Take the fuel pipe off and put a tub under it. Turn the ignition on (dont think you have to start the engine) and it should pump out fuel. Then your know if the fuel is getting to the engine properly or not.
  13. #13
There is a 'metal dust cap' the type everyone nicked off bmw's when you were about 12, at the end of the fuel rail. You could do with unscrewing that then pressing the release valve in. Watch it because fuel will (should) squirt out everywhere, try put some rag under it. Now while holding that in, get someone to try start the car. Fuel should be forced out of the fuel rail under pressure. If it does that then you can rule out fueling as a problem then id move onto checking crank sensor..
  14. #14
yea will try both of these when i go back up to the car! does anyone have the part number for a fuel filter on a VTS? its only a quick change so if its not expensive then my change it incase it is that, that is blocked?

    Thanks

    Bill.

p.s. just read the other post and realised you had copied and pasted lol but thanks for info! have one on me!
  15. #15
I wrote it out for you first but yeah looks like you are both in the same position really.

Its got to be straight forward there isn't much to fuel delivery - it must be 1 of 3 things or a break somewhere between. Filters arn't much only £10 ish from a main dealer - worth doing then thats rulled that out.

    Good luck
  16. #16
ah cheers fella didnt look at the times. yea i just want to eliminate all the cheaper possabilties before i start taking bigger more expensive steps into fixing the old girl! i take it a halfrauds jobbie would be ok for now? incase the dealer doesn't stock them? (but would imagine they do.)

    many thanks,

    Bill.

bro we're in the same possition except my car fucked up out side my door (actually outside my door as was using the outside light to run my power cables to my amps)
its baffled me and was planning on having the put thru its MOT next week but think i'll have to give that a miss
  18. #18
3 of you with the exactly same problem by the sounds of it its no good.

I use Halfrauds filters all the time and they do the job fine - its worth a shot.

Im not sure on Saxos but on Peugeot HDI engines, if it senses a problem with the fuel pressure (ie low pressure) it will cut the fuel supply to protect the high pressure pump and will not start untill the code is cleared from the ECU. Probably not relevant, but if you have got someone that will plug it in for you to see if there are any fault codes stored - it might be worth checking that aswell?
  19. #19
that is a good shout also mate i will take my laptop and lead and give that a shot! yea i wish my car was outside my house otherwise i would have had it sorted by now lol (well hopefully!) if i find what my problem is i will let you know whats up hopefully going to go look at it soon! so if i get it going will deffo let you know as it might be same problem as they do sound very similar.

    Thanks,

    Bill.

also with the halfrauds fuel filter does it come with the strap or will i need to get that seperatly?

    Bill.
  21. #21
thanks mate i'm thinkng mine might be a relay as was running my 0 awg amp power cable down the passenger side foot well. I was having t force my arm up the back of the dash to get hold of the cable so i may of knocked a relay or something to do with the imobilliser. but as i'm busy all the time haven't been able to check the car in sunlight to see if theres anything wrong relay wise. will have a look in a min and let ya know
  22. #22
Mine was just cabled tied on... but that is mine
  23. #23
what ones the fuel pump relay
  24. #24
lol last resort to get mine home will do same lol then get one ordered up!

    Bill.

    any luck yet mate
  27. #27
no not yet man was going to go down and see the car but then my girlfriends dad had been released from hospital so been round there lol wont make it down there today as the car is in a locked carpark (lock the gates) so will have to do it on my lunch breaks tomorrow lol! you not had any luck?

    Bill.
  28. #28
right had a tinker with the car today on luch but have now found that there is fuel getting the the rail! i pulled one of the fuel hoses off with a rag ready and sure enough there was fuel, so i have another dilemma i dont think its sparking! unless the injuectors would fail but wouldnt have thought they all die at same time?

    any ideas?

    Bill.
  29. #29
    anyone?

    Bill.
  30. #30

It isnt the coil pack, i was told it was on mine, but its not ive replaced it twice now, 1 was second hand then i ended up buying a new one, and still got the same problem!

Ive been told its more than likly to be the Crank Sensor! Hope this helps!
  33. #33
mine is doing the same aswell im going to try the crank sensor ive been told its the ecu bt i dnt think it is
  34. #34
yea managed to code read it today and first fault to come up was crack sensor! changed it over and fired up first time on the dot! maybe worth few others checking these! maybe have something to do with extreme weather we been having? (just a thought!)

    Bill.
  35. #35
thanks bro will get one as i got a new coilpack and still didn't start then messed around and the car started but then died down the road. i checked to see if the fuel pump relay was the fault and it was fine i could hear it click when my mate turn the ignition then checked the fuel pump and there was no current at all have no idea whats the promlem with mine
  36. #36
same problem with mine, need to check crank sensor and fuel pump relay (not sure which one it is) also my batterey light is on constant =/ with my tempguage not working... GREAT!
