Ream Beam/Beam Refurbishment

  1. #1
Now that iv stopped using my car so much on a regular basis, its time to sort her out.

And first up is the suspension.

So i have a few questions

Iv heard that 106gti rear beams have a bigger torsion bar than the VTS', [iB]s this true?[/B]

i have a disc beam from a VTR in my garage, but i think its seen better days, so as my cars getting on mileage wise, i want to put quality (or as quality as possible being french) parts on it.

Iv seen that www.imaxle.co.uk do refurbished rear beams for £275, so if it comes to it, ill pay that. Anyone used this company before?

I remember seeing in peoples sigs over the years that they can offer refurbs on rear beams, does anyone still offer this? If so, can you leave a quote with break down of the prices, can be on a beam you have or the one i have in the garage.

    Rear bushes? any suggestions?

Im planning on getting coilovers for the front. Probably The AP racing ones from Kam. They come with rear shocks as well, so that will sort the shocks out for the back.

Think thats everything, anyone that can help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

No VTS and GTIs have the same torsion bars, your thinking of ARBs which SOME of the gTIs have a 24mm bar in.

IMAXELS charge £250 then you can take away your premium discount aswell so even cheaper, and they do delivery and collection for £18. They also supply Spoox Motorsport with parts aswell, and they rebuild beams for saxmax cars.

    Check their section:

Piggy123 also does rear beam refurbs and KrisB

Rear bushes...Mounts** powerflex/grpN or search for aps cars, they do rally spec ones.

Coilovers id personally get Gaz GHAs though they come with a 300lbs spring so youd idealy have to upgrade the rear aswell with thicker tbars, also this kit comes with rear adjustables all in for just over £500.

    Alsooo

I said get the Gaz GHAs but with them comin with 300lbs springs youd have to spend money on the rear with thicker bars.

So if you spend abit more and get AST coilovers and some Bilstein B8 dampers at the rear then your spending more on the suspension setup, BUT youll be saving money as you wont have to get thicker bars, the ASTs can come with 180lbs springs so the rear can remain untouched if you want.

And another post sorry lol, itll get abit confusing all this as it contradicts each other all the time.

You can run 300lbs set up on the front and a lame rear end with standard tbars.

The cup cars or GrpA rally spec cars which compete run some odd setups if all you know is saxp lol. They have standard rear bars on over 300lbs springs. Cant rmeber exact details, but basically youd have to spend money and experiment unless you keep to a known reliable setup which are all over saxp.

If your serious about a good setup and dont mind spending some £ ask AlexR and he'll calculate the correct springs lbs and heights etccc. (hope he dont mind makin him be more busy lol)

    wow! thanks for the replies.

Im happy to spend money on it, but im not looking for something with is absolutely amazing, as currently, its only a westcoast.

Let see if i get what your saying:

With the Gaz GHA's coilovers, they come with 300lbs springs, so in order to have that on the front, you'll need bigger tbars on the back, which is more money to spend, but do come with adj. rear dampers.

With the AST Coilovers, they can come with 180lbs springs so no need to upgrade the rear tbar. Then get some Bilstein B8 dampers for the rear.

    Got it i think.

Looking at some of the prices, there are some GAz GHA's on ebay or £474 delivered. Doesnt say, but i pressume these are 300lbs springs?

On Kam, theyre are some AST Coilovers which are £556.84 and then the Bilstein B8's are £79.47 each. So roughly for the complete set up would be £720.

Thats probably a bit more than i was thinking of paying, but its all food for thought

Another quick question, What about top mounts?

Best people for refurb'd beams is a lad called piggy123. Best quality beams i have seen by a long way.

You can run high poundage springs with standard TB's. People run 300 with them. In theroy they should be upgraded but is personal preference. New standard rear beam bushes will do or you can go powerflex race ones.

Thats precisley it mate. The AST's cost more for the setup. The GAZ are cheaper for the kit, though youll have to spend a few hundred on Tbars.

GAZ GHAS's come with a 325lbs springs, but you can ask for their lowest which is 300lbs in that kit.

If you did want to get the firmer spring but keep the smaller Tbars at the rear then you could find the post i was talking about with high lbs front with standard rear on the rally cars. Think it was made by dannygti or colin i THINK.

Top Mounts depend on what coilover you have.
