has anybody got a guide to setin the valve timing right so i can put my head back on ie, before i lock the pully which cylinder valves should be open on inlet and exhaust?
timing
-
#1
-
#2When cylinder 1 is at tdc then all the valves above it should be closed
-
#3Lock bottom end off, you will see 1 and 4 at the top and 2 and 3 down in the bores.
The cam then needs to be locked, can only be locked one way. You will have some valves open BTW. Refit belt, keep the slack on the tenioner side of the run. Once tensioned, rotate engine by hand at least 2 revolutions. Recheck cam timing by locking bottom and top end. Recheck tension-belt should twist 90degrees with reasonable thumb and finger pressure in the middle of the longest run. (use "locktite" on the tensioner pulley nut for peace of mind)
If it makes a whizzzing noise when reving engine its a bit tight. -
#4you lock the bottom end off (flywheel) with a 5mm allen key through a small hole in the block, on gearbox housing just below where the head meets block, next to thermostat housing. have someone turn the crank over by hand and you will feel the allen key locate into a hole in the flywheel.
then lock off the cam or cams.
as above for the tension.
turn the crank over by hand before and do a few revs to make sure the valves dont twat the pistons, disconnect the coil pack once the belt is set and tensioned. turn the car over for a few secs with the key, this will help to check the belt again, check between pulley and the tensioner.
if your happy, connect the coil pack back up, start the car and hope for the best lol
