I have a 99 mk1 vtr, with pipercross induction kit and backbox. Recently when drive it has sound like the exhaust has been scraping but when i have looked under the car there has been enough clearence. So on the drive to day i put it in 1st gear with the hand brake on and put the revs up and the noise started so i opened the door keeping it on the revs and bent round and looked under the car and the exhaust around the middle section where the cat is was shaking a lot making the rattling sound i could hear. Any idears?

#5Could be a few things really,
1. Get under the car and see if anything obvious is loose
2. See if any of the clamps are knocking on the heatshield
3. See if the actual heatshield is loose -
#6i had same problem and couldnt figure it out.then i realised there was a spare wheel holder ,under the back of the car. i tightened it up from the boot ,problem solved .

#7could be heatshield . . . could have plenty of clearance when you look but its not untill the engine moves the zorst moves that bit more and catches.
could be h brake cable
could be rubber hangers are wearing and causing abit more sag, giving more movement
there is a bolt on the cat / centre section that bolts into the gear box, that could have broken, causingit to rattle. -
#8but like what coleman said, they are also things to check as it does sound like the heatshield could be loose or the pipe could be hitting the back axle

#9Thanks for all the helpful replys. I will get it up on the blocks tomorrow when its light and have a good look under there. I thought it was the hangers at the back box end at first so have ordered and just recieved some powerflex hangers will get them fitted as well when i look under there.

#11I had the same thing mate...
Took the zorst off and found that there was a plate welded on the bottom of the cat and one of the welds had come loose and it was flapping around making one hell of a racket.
