Fuel is just dissapearing

  1. #1
Hey guys im in need of advice. Im absolutly certain my car is guzzling fuel far faster than normal. I put £20 worth of fuel in the car on monday and managed to get 118 miles out of it and i dont drive fast or stay in high rev bands. Its a 1.1 02' Desire and i dont have any engine modifications. Why is all my fuel going so fast i just cant afford it! :'(

    Help appreciated

Its more than likely your driving style.

As above because if it was over-fuelling it wouldn't be running right

Hope not mate, i usually change gear around 2000rpm and stay within the speedlimits, its just been wierd that this week alone the fuel economy was appauling. Ill try an uber perfect fuel saving fill up next week to see if it was a one off. Cheers

why not take it for an emissions test? Is your mot due? they will do it for free in the mot. If its suddenly using more petrol you might have made a mistake with your calculation, or you could be using supermarket petrol which is not as good, or it could b your lambda sensor going, or blocked air filter, but that would show up on an emissions test.

Definitely something wrong there. Last time we checked, our 1.1 gets awesome MPG. Well over 100 miles to £10 of fuel!

Thanks for the advice guys, there mite be a few things to note:

-M.O.T is due in august =/
-I usually fuel up at petol stations like Shell, BP, Esso or Total.
-My air filter was recently changed and i dont have a proper oil breather just a silicone hose going betweet the air filter and oild breather hole, this has a kind of kink in the pipe which could be restricting air flow.
-I used to fuuel up £15 and get 150mpg if i drove carefully

could be a mis calcuation mate id fill up and see what happens as mine is modded and i get well over 100 miles for £10 you could have a tiny leak in your fuel filter i had that problem ages ago and the fuel filter was to blame had a pin sized hole and was simply dripping my fuel away.

Same thing's sorta happening with my VTR.

£20 petrol, driving economically within speed limits, 110 miles.

nightmare this, ive had the same problem for a few weeks now. i used to get around 200 miles out of 20 quid in my vtr, seems to have suddenly dropped to around 140 miles, and is now at around 120 miles before i have to fill up again. Ive already addressed the obvious points such as driving style, type of journey, tyre pressures, weight in the car etc. without any success. Im taking it for a service to try and get it sorted so i'll report back here with my findings.

Have you checked all your fuel lines/petrol tank for leaks?have you changed the fuel filter recently?it could be blocked up.

Ill have a check for fuel leaks and i have just put in a new standard air filter and hose, so it could be leaking in some way

have you ever considered the vast increase in petrol pricess casuing your "£20" to not go as far

i.e fill £20 with 0.98p fuel gets you 20.48 litres
on 1.10 fuel it gets you 18.8 litres ?

    just some food for thought

Just serviced my car & flushed some redex into the system so gonna put a fiver in (Gallon) and see how long that lasts.

The old parts looked really old i took off the car so i hope that was the cause

Only getting about 50 odd mile for a tenner :s

    So i hope this helps

What causes it too run rich ?

    Ecu settings? Injectors??

Mine maybe something to do with the cams that are fitted. But can be anything really, most likely cause is whats been said, ECU settings, Sensors or Injectors. Garage where i go named one of the possible sensors, cant remember what it was though, something to do with the Oxygen, as it weren't my Lamba as it's just been checked.
