Alright people? I have a dilema my car is making a wining sound. when it's cold it dosen't do it but once warm and oil thins out it starts wining, I've taken it to 3 garages but one don't really count as i told the bloke and he was like it's the gear box without test driving it, two other mechanic's from the same garage and both test drove it says thrust bearing and the last garage i went to said it was the gearbox, problem is i don't want to spend £270 getting the clutch and thrust bearing replaced then it be the gearbox, It changes fine no problem just that annoying wining sound but when i put the clutch in it stops, I'm just worried it's the gearbox.
Trust bearing OR Gearbox :S

#2i have the same problem and loads of garages have told me more possibilities etc.
my advice would be save and replace both (i know its a pian, but its also peace of mind)
so far i have enough for gearbox and just saving for clutch kit -
#3Yeh but i've have a price for clutch and box 1,058!!, And I'm not 100% sure it is the box, It changes far too smooth.
-
#4thrust bearing comes with a clutch kit. i just got a valeo today for £92 and got a 2nd hand vts box for £90
-
#5Yeh, i just want know which it is, cause I don't fancey getting a new box
-
#6Sounds like a bearing inside the box to me, Thrust bearing noise wound be from cold and it would quieten down/change sound when the clutch pedal is pressed.
Also if it only makes the noise when moving id say gearbox, if it does it when stationary in neutral then thrust bearing. -
#7It stops when i put my foot on the clutch.
-
#8had a similar problem, started off same as yourself, then just got worse. ended up having new clutch kit, didnt cure the proble, so had recon gearbox fitted, and both driveshafts at same time. expensive but worth it in the long run
-
#9Not good, and not liking the sound of this.
-
#10i got the recon box for 325 and fitted for 150, so not too bad. Something to save up for!lol

#11OK i have the exact same problem, so did my mate who also has a Quiksilver, He changed the Clutch including Thrust bearing. The noise was still there, So he changed the Box and all is good.
So that's what i will be doing, changing the box.
But Jesus christ mate a Grand to change the Box and clutch!!!!!!!!! That's stupid!!!!! Certainly wouldn't pay more than 500 quid at the max
