   mates got a diagnostics code reader
   
   will this work on a 97 106 gti i think he said its a OBD 2 scanner
   
   also my engine management light isnt on will it still tell me what is up with the car like would it tell me any of the following
   
   
   missing on cylinder X
   temperature sensor not working
   map sensor not working
   tps sensor not working
   crank sensor not working
   
   
   anything like that?

   Chances are it wont, no, it'll work on 3 plug ECUs (2001 onwards), but not single plug ECUs (upto 2001).
   
   Could still try it though.

   crap so do i need a obd 1 scanner to plug into mine?

   Nope, you need one of the couple hundred quid scanners that Peugeot use.
