weird grinding noise!!

   happens when i brake a little hard.
   I dont mean slamming on the breaks,or coming to a sudden stop.
   Just to slow the car down.
   
   if i tip the brakes there no noise at all.
   im just worried that if i have to stop suddenly something will go wrong.
   
   Its on the left hand side of the back.
   Ive checked for any damage etc and nothing i can see.
   
   any ideas??
   new discs needed maybe?
   
   *i had the car lowered a few months ago*
   bout a 40mm drop.
   i have pro race 1.2 alloys.
   with only myself and one passanger its happening.
   
   please help.

   alri horse, remember me?? haha green sax frm the lucan meet? im driving a goldy like urs now ha, id check ur calipers and make sure the bolts havnt cum loose, my green saxo did that an it turned out to b a missing caliper fixing bolt, the car only made the noise wen heavy braking
