deacceleration hum

  1. #1
Its a wet day today. When I was driving home today I was going down a hill in 5th and let off the accelerator. After a while going down this hill, I noticed a unusal humming coming from the engine. This was the normal humming of the engine, something else. I stuck it into 4th and the hum went away.

    any ideas?

my car was doing this on the motorway not to long ago but no sign of the sound no more

I have heard the sound a bit more today. It seems to happen when I an de-accelerating gently (no brake) and am in 4th or 5th. It even happens when im in neutral at some speed. Once I start accelerating again, im fine. Doesn't happen all the time.

Sounds like its coming from passenger side front in the engine bay somewhere.

I've noticed as well today that it sounds like a rotational sound. In other words, a spinning sound of sorts. Any ideas guys?

is it gearbox whine?? does it go when u put the clutch in?

100% its the Driveshaft Intermediate bearing

its when you back off and or put the clutch in, its a sort of ossilating sound. i've had this on my car and replaced the driveshaft was £70 or you could replace the bearing for £20 but i thought £50 might aswell do the whole shaft and its easier to do.

hm, thanks for the input. I noticed today that it putting the clutch in doesn't make a difference, but turning the wheel to the right does.

I've got the exact same problem with mine, it's fine when i accelerate but once i free roll the car it begins to whine and if i turn the wheel to the right it stops and feels normal again.. ANY IDEAS?.

Thanks for that...I have MOT at the end of March and at the moment, im not much of a car person...so im a bit hesitant to do it myself. What might happen if i continue to run on it as is for another month? Or is it best to get this sorted ASAP? I don't want to ruin my car.
