rebored bottom end.

how much should i expect topay to have vts bottom end rebored to 78.7mm
    average price really.
  2. #2
Boring the block ought to be in the region of £100, but the strip down and rebuild are the expensive bit.
  3. #3
Out of curiosity, why do you want it re-bored by 0.2mm ?
  4. #4
I was justy thinking that Dave. Usually people go bigger for over sized pistons but 0.2mm?

Here's just my thought process when I was choosing a piston size.

Wossner for example - do the following piston sizes off the shelf:
    78.5mm (Standard bore)
    78.7mm
    79mm
    79.5mm
    80mm

I'd personally not want to run anything over 79mm pistons on boost as it'll leave a thin'ish width between two pistons - especially if cranking things up.

With the above being that case, I'm stuck to either 78.5mm, 78.7mm or 79mm.

I'd want a rebore to make sure the bore is spot on for running the pistons in/shape etc. leaving me with either 78.7mm pistons (+0.2mm) or 79mm pistons (+0.5mm).

With the 78.7mm ones it'd leave some meat on the bore to go to 79mm in the future if rebuilt again etc. or opt for the 79mm.

I ended up opting for 79mm ones.

Didnt realise there was such a range from wossner.

Yeh, I'm not sure about other piston manufacturers though, can imagine they'd maybe skip the 78.7mm pistons and maybe the 79.5mm ones too.

HHmmmmm got me wondering now. Just seems a strange size. Will have to look what other companies do.

JE pistons list a 78.8mm size - not sure about the sizes above this though

I went for the 80mm ones. Beefcake! BEEKCAKE!!!

I'd love to know power and torque wise, what would be the difference between your engine with say 78.5mm (oem width) hi comps and then your 80mm hi comps.

Just to actually quantify the difference
  12. #12
    Yeah, good question.
  13. #13
My old bottom end cost £40 or £10 a cylinder providing its pre stripped that was cash in hand so £40 + vat would be usual cost
  14. #14
Didnt JP run very large pistons aswell. The size i have in my head seems a little too big though but defiently ran something stupid

My new bottom end will be running 80mm size as well Dave

Think I payed £20+vat per cylinder for taking 0.5mm out of the bores of my block. Again that was with me stripping everything off it prior to dropping it off.

the block is stripped and ready did that myself. am going forged hence the rebore, and ross i might go for the 79s, do u reckon that be more worth the effort and money ????

ur a star m8, and thanks everyone else, have found a place local that was recomended by a couple friends that have used them.

i am only going for 78.7mm pistons, it costing me 60 quid for all the bores to be re bored!!

i didnt want to go any bigger, that is a good increase is cc size, with 78.7mm pistons i tihnk the cc is 1599!

    so it an alright increase,

so i am paying 15 quid a bore!!

I was expecting around £100-£150 for a rebore when I get mine done, but sounds like it's a bit cheaper than that !
  23. #23
Sorry to hi-jack.. but what sort of price we looking at for entire S2 rallye 1.6 8v bottom end rebuild realistically?

It's hardly any increase in CC. You alright chap?

probs a stupid question lol, but as i will be waiting for pistons to arrive i would like to get the rbore done, now im going for the wozzner 79mm low comp pistons as been talked round lol, so does that mean i want thebore done to 79mm?????????

I've not got the piston box to hand - but off the top of my head you get the block machined to 79.00mm with the pistons being 78.92mm (0.08mm clearance)

on the NA box it's 79.00mm bore for 78.93mm pistons.

I'll be able to look at the box on Sunday evening.

cool, cant wait to star rebuilding now.
