chaging brake pads

  1. #1
Ok ive got the caliper out and the old pads off. then when i went to put the new 1s in a realised that on the steel side of 1 pad, there is a metal bit sticking out and on the other, its completely flat with no metal bit sticking out.

Which one goes on the outside of disc and which 1 goes inside disc.

    Thanks.

    Which car? Which calipers?

Pads with clips/studs etc usually going on in the inside. The clip will usually line up with the piston somehow. By clipping inside it or in a groove etc etx

bit that sticks out goes to where you see the piston

^^ he's right, and the one with the flat side goes on the outside of the caliper (furthest from the hub)

got you. that become clear when i saw the rest pattern on the old 1s. thanks.

I got a problem, i think its because im doing it in the wrong order.

ive got the new pads into the caliper housing and fitted the clips etc, ive now got the new disc brake on the hub screwed in, but i cant manage to push the caliper onto the disc. obviously the new pads are thicker.

what are the steps i need to take to get it on, im assuming ill need to reverse my previous steps.

    cheers.

make sure that you fully open the caliper. wedge a screw driver in there and open it up...

should fit over nice and easily then

if its the rear the piston screws in not pushes in i found that out after a hour lol

O ok. so what i need to do is just screw the piston in. Same principle as say a bolt yeh?

Do i do it with my hand or what?

How exactly did you do it mate?

Then do i need to screw it back out after im done or just leave it be?

    Cheers.

it may screw by hand if not use a pair of pliers screws in i didn't screw mine back in had to change my disks and pads for m.o.t . but i did notice there's more lift on handbrake

be careful when using pliers don't damage the piston

Thanks mate, i doubt i would have worked that out?.

Front pistons need to be pushed in.

    Rear pistons screw in. Clockwise.
