Implications of using a standard exhaust system from a larger capacity engine?

What are the implications of using a standard exhaust system from a larger capacity engine, instead of buying a loud performance system?

The aim is to obviously gain power over standard with as little increased exhaust note as possible.

Also im not basing this purely on the saxo, the car in mind is actually a nasty old fiesta a mate is building!

Aslong as they pipe diameter is big enough to cope with the amount of exhaust gases exiting the engine it will cope. If it is too smal it will restict the engine and could damage the exhaust very quickly.

    Thats my thinking behind it.

The thing i wonder about though is say you have a 2.5" performance system, the backbox/centre box(es) are less restrictive than a standard 2.5" system. So would using a standard 2.75" or even 3" system counter act this or am thinking about this the wrong way.

I gather its going to be a bit trial & error to find out which system actually is giving good gains.
