gear stick shaking bad when accelerating

  1. #1
I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before, or has any idea what it could be that is wrong with my car.

When i'm accelerating my car shakes and the gear stick shakes really bad, it gets worse the higher the revs get. It was doing it only above 4k at first but sometimes it does it even in 5th at 2k. Its not every single time, but its getting more and more frequent quickley.

When it does it bad it does it really bad and the car vibrates well bad and gear stick moves well fast.

    Any ideas?

could be the gearbox or something related it did this on my 306
  3. #3
What was it on your 306? The car has had a replacement gearbox and clutch at some point so hopefully it wont be that.
  4. #4
sounds like your linkages might be bit worn mate. there located at the back on the engine and get under the car to see if they have worn.
  5. #5
i had the exact same thing with a car i was looking at for someone. it was the offside driveshaft bearing that is mounted to the block halfway along the shaft. jack your car up and have a jiggle as it is very likely to be that

Thanks lads, i am off to ricky p's at some point next week hopefully but its quite far away and if its something expensive i cant afford to get it done yet therefore pointless going so wanted some ideas of what it could be before i go.

How do you see if gear linkages are worn? Im a newbie so if im looking myself i need to have a good idea of what im looking at lol.

I'll have a look at that too gaz, thanks!

Any thing else to look at? Ricky said it could the driveshafts, how do you tell if theyre gone?
  7. #7
yeah could be the linkages man, they dont normaly wear that much its usualy means theres a wear in the gear box
  8. #8
How do i check if its the gearbox mounts? Gonna have a look but want to know what im looking for.

Its barely drivable, can hardly get above 40mph its well bad. It only had a gearbox about 15k ago.

Can you feel this wobbling through the steering wheel? If you can then it could be wheel balancing that is seriously out.

Driveshafts, wheelbearings would be other possibilities. Or even the ball joint in the wishbone where it connect to the strut could be seriously worn giving the same ffect as wheel bearing with wheel balencing out aswlel.

Engine mounts aswell. Check for movment in the engine bay when sumone is in the car with it running, put it in ast bring the clutch up to the bite quickly (keep a foot down on the brake too).

try ur driveshafts mate sounds just like what hapend to me a couple of times and always is driveshafts
  11. #11
Okay al try those too, dont know what im looking for for most things so i probabley wont spot it but i have a few things to look for lol.

How do you check the gearbox mounts? im hoping its those and think it could be, or driveshafts.

The thing is its not in the steering wheel at all, well it shakes when the whole dash and shit shakes but you cant mainly feel it in the steering wheel.

I was out in it earlier because i HAD to go somewhere and fuuck me it was bad, i wont be driving it anywhere now til it gets fixed i can barely get up to 40 without the gear lever going crazy and my bones rattling.
  12. #12
Hmmmm im thinkin its is the driveshaft, possibly popped out but not all the way.
  13. #13
Got the car jacked up but tbh, i dont have a clue what im looking for.

I know where the driveshafts are, and on the passenger side the bit connecting to the engine wiggles a little bit and makes a noise, and the other one doesnt but i wudnt of said that was the cause of this. But i dont know! Could it? It wiggles a tiny bit and makes a little knocking noise but this gear stick rattle is very bad and makes the car barely drivable.. this driveshaft doesnt seem to be that bad, its the inside CV i think.

Anyone know where to look for gearbox mounts and how to tell if theyre gone?
  14. #14
It could be the driveshaft, imagine when its spinning at 40mph, the little nock you feel under the car will be exagerated.

For gearbox mounts check the lower one at the back of the gearbox. Chek the rubber inside for perished or cracked. Get a crowbar inbetween the mount and the bracket and arch it and test how much flex there is.

Also try it from above the engine, think i said it in this thread, but get sumone to sit in the car with the brakes on, put it in gear and bring the clutch up repeatedly quite sharply (whn its switched on), listnen for a knocking and watch for movment.

Upper gearbox one, take the battery off, then the battery tray and support the gearbox with a jack. Undo the bolts holding the rubber mount on and slide off. If the middle stud has snapped then you need a new mounting plate which is held onto the gearbox with 3 13mm's.

Thanks for that info, but i dont even know where to find the gearbox lol is it under the battery? Ill try get someone who knows what theyre doin to look.

I know what your saying about the driveshaft but its not really a clunking noise, its the fact the cars shaking and gearstick looks like its gonna snap off while driving slow.
  16. #16
The gearbox? yeh its underneath the battery lol, big silver box lol.

I think its best you leave it to Ricky lol he'll know what it is straight away with his eyes closed.
  17. #17
I know but i dont have the money to fix it yet if its gonna be expensive and hes 25miles away or so, i dont wanna drive it all that way this bad if its sumet i cant afford to fix n have to drive back so i wanted to know before going.

Ill see if someone round here can say what it is.
  18. #18
i had this and changed my engine and gearbox mounts and it was a lot better
  19. #19
Ok i got a few pics from ages ago which should help you.

From under the car look for this mount, and check the rubber in it the round bit. See if there is much play etc

This is the gearbox mount, check this one aswell undo both bolts either side and the nut on top and check the middle stud bolt hasnt snapped.

Yep, undo your positive and negative on the battery, undo the either 10 or 13mm on the lil clamp at the front of the battery then its under there
  22. #22
Thanks a lot pal youve replied loads. Ill have a look in the morning im well hoping its a mount.
  23. #23
Ive been on here all day, nothin else to do lol

It might not be the mount, but if it is youve saved your self some money and hastle
  24. #24
Least i can look and see if it is that cheers.

It just makes sense that its something thats loose ad making gearstick go crazy.

By the way it doesnt do it if cars still or when moving if i put clutch in, or if i just roll with clutch out. Its as soon as i touch the accelerator even a little bit.

got EXACTLY the same problem with my VTS,
did u find out what it was??
  26. #26
bumped an old post there, think it ended up being some mounts and a driveshaft iirc
  27. #27
    driveshaft!
    100% sure

it was the gearbox mount causing the shaking, this thread is over a year old.

I am not having this problem hope it's a mount (

I have the same problem, I have new driveshafts, new bottom ball joints, replaced the bottom engine/gearbox mount so am lost as to what it is!
