power steering and lowered = expensive repair

  1. #1
the other month my power steering went and the cause was the fluid pipe was rubbing on my suspension and had split. the cost for the new pipe including labour was about £200 quid.

i took my car back to the garage for a check up and they said the new pipe has already been worn from the suspension and could give way at any time.

has anyone else had this problem? i'm assuming it must be quite common?

by the way the springs are eibach, lowered by 50mm at the front.

Common problem that's been asked many times mate, search

Basically when lowering you wheel gets close to the PAS pipe and rubs on it, some people bend it out of the way. £200 is very steep, mandyslover was selling the pipes at £30 including first class recorded delivery. Then get a haynes manual, will end up saving you alot of money

The MK2 pipe rubs on the drivers side steering rod.

It can be bent out of the way simply enough if you know what you're looking for. There is a guide available for premium members showing what you need to bend.

The other solution is to fit a MK1 PAS pipe. These are pennies and £200 to do this is daylight robbery!

Although if the pipe is left and does rupture then you're looking at around £200 just for a new pump....

I had exactly the same problem and i'm surprised my pump wasn't affected by it at all as i ran with hardly if any fluid for a while.

As said, the pipe can be bent out of the way of the track rod, which is what i had to do to my new one.

    You got ripped right off

mk1 saxo pipe would of been about 40 for the both of them, you only need the one, high pressure one iirc and about a litre of pas fluid which is about 6 quid

Inlet manifold off with everything else and thats about all that needs to come off to fit the pipe
