how to spray center console + vents?

  1. #1
Ive got a black vtr and after seeing pics of a sprayed center console and vents, I would like to do mine but have no idea how to do it lol

Ive never really done that kind of thing before so any advice or tips would be great.. is it possible to do this yourself or to get a good finish would you have to get a bodyshop to do it?

    Cheers

would you need to rub them down before primer or just straight to primer?

Try something small first mate, like the vents. Easy enough and if you fluff up the vents it will cost you pennies for a new one.
Wash it first in hot water (no cleaner tho), this will get rid of any polish you have on it. Then sand it with sandpaper so the primer will stick. Then clean it of any bits from sanding. The apply a few coats of plastic primer (get it from halfords). Allow the primer to dry slighty betwen coats and make sure the coats are light (heavy coats may cause the primer or paint to run giving streak marks.). Then sand with wet and dry paper (fine paper). Again wipe of any bits so its smooth and alloy to dry (24hrs to be safe) Then apply your colour. Again give it light coats so it doesnt run and give it half hour between coats. Then allow 24hrs to dry. The sand with wet and dry, wipe off excess and then apply laquer in the same way, thin layers,24hrs to dry and bobs ur uncle ur done.

Ppl may say thats the long way of doing it but if u want it done properly, take ur time.

    Rub down
    Primer
    Paint
    Lacquer

Rub down using 1200grit wet and dry
    Clean dust off
Lightly spray primer on. Span it over about 5 coats, put too much on and you encourage drips.
    Paint, same as above
    Laquer...same again!

pop em off, sand down, primer 2 coats, wate 25- half a hour 4 it to dry... spray on your colour, do a few light coats and leave to dry in between then apply a few coats of laqure..... the side vents pop straight out, the center console has 2 screws at the top behind the blanks at ether side, two are at an angle above the heater switchs, and the last is right at the bottom... ull b able to c it, im doing mine as we speek wile watching blade 3

Funny enough ive just been talking to my brother about this, he says the paint will stay but not forever, becuase its some kind of weird plastic, thermo setting or something like that, the paint would just flake off in the end, i cant really argue with members though, if someones done it then they have. Hope this helps

will the lacquer not set hard and protect it from flaking? does it not only flake if you just spray the paint direct without primer etc? i remeber someone in graphics in school tryina do this and messed it up.... i then did a bmx and my uncle (painter and decorator) told me i had to use primer and clear laquer or it will flake
  15. #15
yea allways use lacqueron what ever u spray
  16. #16
right, I think I get the jist of it.

what would I use to spray them white though? As in what type of paint?

is all this available from Halfrauds?

How much is it likely to cost? Links would be nice.. lol
  17. #17
Ye get it from halfords, not sure think its about £5.99 a can. All the cans will have a car colour on them, like audi white etc so its pretty easy to get the white you want. Any car paint is ok but make sure u get PLASTIC PRIMER and not regular metal primer.

And to the comment above somewhere, ur best leaving the paint about an hour between coats to get a gud finish.

halfrauds paint is wank i m o try a local motor factors like G.T

Halfords paint is ok for interior plastics, but i wudnt use it on the exterior.
  20. #20
lol if your using white go for a white primer gives a better effect thats what i did and dont use halfords or poundland paint etc do a proper job and go to your local autofactors and get some there (cheaper and better)
  21. #21
nice one, sounds easy enough then.
