Idling from cold start

  1. #1
So my car idles shit from cold, the exhaust pops and the engine jerks so can't be doing any good! I've replaced the coolant temp sensor and stepper motor. Still does it! What can I try next?

It's kinda normal to be honest. I have to sit and let mine idle for about 20 seconds (from a dead cold start) before attempting to do anything haha.

I've reason to believe that using a thinner oil can help... i.e 5W-40. I could be wrong though.

mines very lumpy from cold but its camed aswell so dont think that helps lol, let mine tick over for about 30seconds

mine too, (vtr) idles waay under 1k and splutters, sometimes stalls if i dont tease the throttle!

mine started to do so about last month...idles bad but as soon as i press lightly the throttle a black cloud comes out of the exhaust (being diesel) and its ok than

There's deffinately something wrong I've had the car 15 months and it's only started doing it like 6 weeks ago. There's got to be something wrong

Like i said mate, ive changed it. Still same problems.

When i start it up it runs on for about 20 seconds.. then it will start chuddering and jerking. Then after a minute of that it will idle ok again. And only does it when cold.

maf sensor ... mass air flow sensor can cause this. both the maf and the coolant temp sensor work in same way. if either fail then on a cold start the ecu will not provide the right amount of fuel into the engine... causing it to run like shit till it reaches optimum temperature. often causing the car to run on 3 cylinders for about 5 minutes till its warm, thats why your idle is shite...if the problem persists when the car is warm look into 1.coil pack 2. faulty injector.. if it goes away when its warm will be maf or coolant temp sensor..

just check your coil pack?? or worn injector........lol...

Tried redex injector cleaner too. Whats the MAF sensor? where is this located? I was going to change the MAP sensor too?

redex can cause problems mate!! like blocked fuel injectors...seen alot of this when i worked at citreon.........

Well it didnt seem to make any difference so hopefully it hasnt blocked anything. Is the MAF sensor the MAP sensor? same thing?

    yes it is

I had the similar same problem on my VTS MK2, only mine wouldn't idle at all from cold and would stall. Was jerky when driving and stopped once warmed up.

Now this sounds daft but have you checked your car battery? Mine had been stud for a while and I stuck oncharge over night, and since then no problem what so ever. I know it sounds bonkers but it worked for me so might be worth a shot.

Ive been and ordered a new map sensor so will fit that tomorrow and see if it fixes it. If not then im clueless as to what it might be?

Battery is fine yes mate tested it.
