Rear end noise. (ting)

  1. #1
    Hi all

I recently changed over the rear beam and a few days ago my car has developed a strange noise from the back end.
It's a similar noise to touching two glass bottles together, sort of high pitched ting. Only happens when I drive round corners aswell (mainly ones with road camber).
I thought it was the arb that needed tightening, I did that this morning which seems to have solved most of it but it still happens on some very cambered corners.
Should I try and tighten it more, or is there something else it could be?
Is it common to do this when a new beam is fitted before it settles in?

    Thanks people.

    Sam

    Care to Explain?

spring washer is like a washer which has been cut and bent a wee bit.

so when you go to tighten it up, the spring effect acts as pressure on both the bolt and end plate.

hope ive explained it well enough

^^^ spot on. try a washer cus it might do up tight but when u drive the bolt can work loose by using a washer it helps keep the pressure on and keep it tight. Be carefull not to over tighten as u can snap the ends of bolt off then u r fooked.

have you got the washer the right side of the beam.

To tighten the arm am i right in thinking i take the passenger wheel off, pop the socket/washers on the bolt and wind the bolt in. Then tighten up the bolt so it pulls the arm onto the splines more.
This what you both are getting at?
As far as im aware there shouldnt be a washer left on the beam after this. Once its tight you take the bolt out and refit the rubber bung on the end of the arb plate. Only washers are the offset ones in the torsion bars.

No there is supposed to be a washer betweed the beam and the chassis if this is in the wrong place it will hit on he arms.

i know there is suposed to be washers between the bushes that hold the beam on the chassis, im on about the arb.

take the bolts of both sides that hold the antiroll bar in place and grease them and put them back in , that cured mine

Don't overtighten the bolt especially if you're re-using old ones as they are prone to snap when very old

They are only supposed to be torqued up to 25nm which is barely anything, they are supposed to have loctite on though to stop them wriggling loose as they are prone to come undone.

Also make sure that the arb is sitting in the end plates correctly and evenly as its not long enough to fill the end plates as a snug fit so if it is right the way in on one side and then not very far in on the other side it can also cause the pinging

Thanks for that willsy, nice and informative.

You can use a socket and bolt to jack the ARB further into the splines.

Best bet might be to remove the end plate bolts, and (with a friend) hit each end plate at the same time with a hammer. Re-fit bolts with loctite and torque to correct setting.

No problem mate need to have a tinker with mine when its back aswel.

I may retap the ARB bolt hole to an M10 aswel so it can be done up more snugly without any risks.

    Hi just found this. http://www.saxperience.com/faq/show-...e.php?artid=87
It in FAQ's hope this helps

I went through all this rigmarole before, turns out the radius arm bearings have gone. I used to get the ting noise coming off roundabouts when the car levelled itself out after the corner. Now it does it over bumps in the road and speedbumps as well.
MOT picked it up as "slight play". I intend to fit refurb beam this summer.

I have this exact problem atm. But since i'm useless at anything technical, how much do you reckon a garage would fix it for?
  24. #24
i know this is a bump, but i have this problem and tryed everything but cant do it!

Put a bolt where the rubber bung is and tightened the arb as much as i could. then tightened the 13mm bolt (which i snapped, and tapped out). its got thread lock on it aswell. any ideas why im still getting a 'ting' noise?
