Thrust bearing noise?

  1. #1
I have owned my vtr since last august and in all the time i have owned it it has always made a grinding noise with the clutch pedal up when in neutral and goes away when the clutch is pressed down and when accelerating but have recentely found out that this noise is coming from the thrust bearing on the clutch. My query is will the car need a whole new clutch or is it just the thrust bearing that needs replacing, or even just adjusting.

I assume it may just need adjusting because in the 6 month i have owned the car the noise hasnt got any worse so its not like its a deteriorating problem.

Im not sure to be honest mate, from the research ive done i would say that your noise is more likely to the gearbox. The thrust bearing noise can be heard when you have the clutch up in neutral which is like a grinding noise and then when accelerating which sounds like a high pitched sqweel

Got this problem with mine at the moment, just started to make a noise like grinding, changes sound tho when depress clutch pedal but seems to drive fine once took off (judders at 1st when taking off from standstill) my mate is a vauxhall mechanic and reckons its the release bearing. Bought a clutch kit so going to do it at the weekend along with cam belt and water pump. If not this then ebay gearbox job. Will update with the results.

It could be thrust bearing but much more likely to be gearbox input shaft bearings. The rattle stops with the clutch down because you are disconnecting the box from the engine. If you hold revs at about 1100rpm (and above) the noise will stop I bet.

Live with it until it gets bad then swap the box for a good one or get it reconned.

In mine thats not the case, when setting off you can here the high pitched whining noise all the way up through the rev range.

Change the clutch, i left mine for ages thinking it would be ok and 2 days ago it went bang and started chewing up the pressure plate.

Done mine this weekend, was the release bearing totally chewed up. When took the box out little bearings fell everywhere, haha. Just put in a complete clutch kit whilst had it off. Not worth the hassle doing just the bearing imo then having to do it again not long down the line cos the clutch goes. Drives nice now, nice and smoooooth! haha

it needs a clutch mate. the thrust bearing is part of a clutch kit so any mechanic will tell you it needs a full clutch.

Weird I changed my box and put a new clutch in but it's still making funny grinding noises- valeo clutch kit and bearing was used too
