Done a voltage test.. 12v before car was switched on and 14.4v when car was running so alternator is powering the battery

But the battery light on the dash is flickering very dim ? Im gonna put it on a trickle charge for 24 hours and see what happens..

Think it just needs a decent charge ?

Battery has had it, they tend to go more suddenly than the old lead acid battery's.

i will go get one out a scrappy bud.

Does it have to be a battery out a saxo or can other batterys work?

battery depends on engine size, u get diff ones for 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 etc. if you find the new battery runs flat again then the alternators gone... i build alternators in work and if a garage sais u need to pay 200+ for a new one their full crap, all youl have to change in it is the regulator (free in my case) but 80 quid tops new! easily done, 3 screws and 2 nuts. as long as the rectifier has no burnt out capacitors the rest will be sound. u can change this without removing alternator from car btw with a few tools.. dw about tension on these nuts and screws... as long as their up tight itl do...jus disconnect battery and loom going to alternator.

Battery light started flickering like mad tonight the front lights were going dim at times then the car misfired..

So looks like a new alternator ?

Check the cables that run from the altonator to the battery. sound like it might not be getting charge, if ll else fails new battery job.

try testing the alt under load and also volt drop pos and neg as the alt may charge ok when not under load hope this helps

Battery light has now stopped flickering.. And when i disconnected the battery positive terminal when running the engine the car kept running so the alternator must be providing power

Does this still show signs of a failing alternator ? Can an alternator provide power on/off like one night the car is nearly dying then tonight its running fine ?

Thats happened to mine- like last week. For about 3 days I had to jump start whenever I started the engine. Went to halfords and picked up and new battery. No probs now!
I also had problems with the indicator and my boyfriend had a look- they were just loose.

It has now stopped and seems running fine

Ive not a clue whether to change battery or alternator cause i dont want to risk it happening again

Maybe corroded connections or a loose wire somewhere ?
