I have the same problem, when under the car I notice its connected to a ball (the actual selector rod under the car), do/can these wear down? Maybe this?

They do wear yes. Could be that. But is most liekly the pin that is on the end of the selector arm. These are usually drilled out and replaced with a bolt which wont lose its rigidity.

Yeahcould be but I'm wondering if the other spare ball on the car Is supposed to be used instead as there is 4 balls but only 3 rods

    1) Take the gearbox off
    2) Punch the pin out.
    3) Replace the pin

does the box have to come off to do it? Just the weekend gone i just replaced the clutch, and cant be assed taking it all off again. It aint that bad to be honest but wouldnt mind it being as new.

Changed mine last nite takes less than 10 mins and box definatly dosent need to come off. Long bar into it from pas side wheel arch, attatch a little punch to the end and get some one to lay under the car to make sure it's lined up then tap it out using punch bar and hammer, use this to tap The new one in also

Good work but i found there wasnt enough room for me to do it on my VTS and the clutch needed changing anyway so i didnt spend too much time trying it with the box on.
