help !!! eating fuel.. 58 miles to £20

  1. #1
hiya as you know i have just put a 1.1 gearbox onto my 1.4, well since then i have started eating fuel.

before the change i was getting around 40-50 miles for a fiver ( which is around average)..

since the new gearbox i now only get 17 miles to a fiver. my driving style has not changed.

i know that changing the gearbox can change the amount fuel i use. but by that amount seems very very extreme.

i have checked for leaks and cant find any, had the car parked on the flat under a white sheet last night (15hours). gone to it this morning and there is no leak.

i also left it running for 20mins on the same sheet and still nothing.
    the car runs fine too.

    so im out of ideas..

    any one ???

    the

But it would not cut economy by more than half mate.

I would be looking at tyre pressures, brakes stuck on/binding, no gearbox oil causing extra drag, poor quality fuel (you might have used a different garage?) and a heavier right foot enjoying the punchier acceleration perhaps.

Can't harm to give the car a quick service as well if you get chance, always helps.

Pretty sure the 1.1 box revs higher in lower gears to compensate for lack of power, check your driving style.

    I got 150mpg from £20 in my 1.1 ;o

You mean you get 150 miles from £20? lol

150miles per gallon would be like 1000 miles on a full tank
  7. #7
I average 420 to 440 miles a tank in VTR. At todays price that's £50.00 a tank full so that's 8.6 miles per pound. In comparison to above I get £172 miles for £20, you must be killing your 1.1 Dave-B!

But she said "since then" meaning nothing else has changed apart from the gearbox, and its only been fitted recently. Whats probably happened is that the car is using more fuel because its revving higher, and there has been some sort or error in measuring MPG, thus making it seem worse.

i wouldnt eat/ drink fuel. its not good for you.

as for the car drinking fuel. i think as said above. testing out your new toy/addition to your car. getting a heavier foot.

i would deffinately give it a service. check gearbox fluid levels!

They will have done something to it at the service, you didnt tell us this before. Like wrong air filter, or plugs or left a connector off. Take it back to the garage that did the service and tell them what mpg you are getting.

    i serviced it myself,
so all the parts are correct,

i spend most of the day yesterday trying to find out whats going on. and failed misrably.

ive been to the place i got the gearbox from and im just waiting on them getting a 1.4 in and im swopping it back, its the only other thing i can think of.

Did you change fuel filter on the service?

    Not leaking is it?

    no i didnt change it,

my 106 gti does about 70 miles to £20, pain in the back side
  18. #18
    Could be leaken.........
  19. #19
no it couldnt be 'leaken'... if what he says is correct. Since i put a shorter ratio box in mine i have noticed a drop in mpg.
  20. #20
how could 1 tell what gearbox is on my gti? it has a date on it so its been changed at some point, codes etc on it somewhere?

it does, but off the top of my head, HALF is pretty extreme.

Lizza, what type of driving are you doing mostly? If it's motorways I can well imagine that you'd see a significant reduction in MPG. Around town, not so.

The same happened to me with the XSI gear box.... I'm going back to a VTS, when I've got it rebuilt.
  26. #26
my vtr does about 300 miles to a tank.

was the clutch replaced when you fitted the new box?

i dont do motorway driving at all, its all around towns and villages.

im going back to a 1.4 soon as the lads got one,

    heres an update.

friday car was on the red, put £15 in it and i've done 51 miles and the red light is due to come on again.

by my old average of mile to the gallon i should get 120miles to my £15 ( give or take a few miles).

so today i parked the car on the flat and put a pipe into the bottom of the tank to see how much petrol was left(thinking i may have had a dodgey float), there should have been 1-1/2 gallons left.
but as no suprise there was a reading on the pipe of less than 1/2 inch.

So my car is obviously burning excess fuel for some reason,
    any one got any ideas?

have you thought about going to a garage and getting them to do an emission test if emission are fine then it must be leaking when driving not neccerely(sp) just at idle but when driving and under more pressure ?

yeah that was next plan, im currently phoning around places now to find a place near me that dos it.

any mot station will do an emissions test for ya

i went to the local bodyshop/garage that i used work at this afternoon. they tested it and its fine,

they are 100% sure i have a leak that is happening when im driving and not parked with the engine running. before i let them look at it to fix it im going to have a look myself.
  34. #34
id jack it up put on axle stand hand brake on and drive it through the gears in the air and get some one to look

hmm this is weird. As i have a 1.1 box on my vtr, and i still get 70 miles from 10 litres (£11.15). I did used to get 80-90, but with fuel prices rising etc..

thanks to all that helped with my fuel problemm and after weeks of trying this and that i think i may have solved it.

it turned out my downpipe was bent and blowing from where it connects to the manifold and also blowing where it connects to the exhurst.
fixed this yesterday and no blowing so hopefully (fingers crossed) it should be a lot better.
what you think, do you think this was my problem?
