new clutch noisey?

  1. #1
alright people, have just changed my gearbox on my vts. now i put a valeo clutch in while the box was off with a new release bearing etc, problem is when my foot is off the clutch the box sounds a bit whurry and squeeky but as soon as i put my foot on the clutch it goes silent which to me is the release bearing but the bearing is brand new. half the reason i bought valeo was to get a decent bearing! or is there something else that could cause the noise inside the box? bit annoying as i only just got it back on the road after 3 weeks off! is there a incorrect way of fitting a release bearing?

    any info appreciated!

Likely gearbox input shaft bearing whne clutch pedal down drive is disengaed from box so shaft stops spinning and noise stops. With car stopped try increasing revs to about 1100rpm with clutch pedal not touched-you will probably find the noise quietens down a lot. Thrust bearing can only be fitted one way but it is easily knocked when jiggling the box back on.

did you locate the release bearing on the clutch fork prongs ?

If so did you disturb it fitting the gearbox ?

yeh i did- it could have been disturbed but how? it slides on and is fitted to the input shaft so how could it have moved?

steve i will try tomorrow when i use it again to see if it quiets down.

so its more than likely the box is dodgy? i bought it from someone on saxp as well

the release bearing should click onto the clutch fork - so that you can't just pull it off.

If it comes off these prongs then the release bearing can twist and wear through the plastic etc. and is buggered - causing the squeeling noise.

    Could be the gearbox too.

IF it was the input shaft bearing then you'd expect to have a little bit of movement in the input shaft when the box wasn't fitted - I presume you didn't feel any ?

there wasnt any play when i put it in, but when i went to fill the gearbox with oil there was a bit of swarf on the inside of the filler plug- which i was concerned about.

i dont think the bearing came off when i fitted it but i cant be sure, would it be easy to knock off when re fitting the box?

if the bearing did come off would it still work in a normal manner? the bite of the clutch is good etc and like i said it goes quiet when you depress the clutch pedal.

I wouldn't worry immediately about a little bit of swarf tbh - some fresh fluid should be fine.

If can knock off when you lift/locate the box using the clutch lever to help, it's happened to me a few times now, I always check the positioning of the release bearing before fully locating the gearbox and bolting it up.

It should do tbh, and you pressing the clutch for the first time can clip the bearing back in and then there's nothing to be worried about.

It's hard to say tbh whether it's either release bearing or input shaft bearing - is the clutch cable adjusted properly? The car drive fine?

    Is the squeeling loud ?

Well it isn't really a squeel more of a crunchy sorta noise. It's a bit hard to explain, saying that though I had a rattling come from somewhere when I started the car this morning clutch up or down. Do you think it's worth removing the box again to check the release bearing? I'm a bit worried! Don't really want to buy another cltuch kit just for a bearing.
