Fuel level gauge buggered?

   My car is showing just over a quater tank of petrol, but when i got to turn it over it splutters, im guessing a full tank of petrol and most probly a fuel level sender unit are in order....

   My fuel gauge sticks reguarly.
   
   I just undo the battery for a few mins and it resets itself.
