i know it wiull increase acceleration but will it bring top speed down alot? i dont want to be doing 70mph and the car reving very high. just need a few pointers really.
    thanks nath.

Hmm, ive found that my VTR is very fast for being a 1.6 8V against VTS's as mine standard was very quick and would keep up to a vts at an extent.

After reading the 1.1 box at 70mph it sits abot 3,300 RPM - which mine does... and its not noisy or annoying as my car does allot of motorway miles per day and never bothers me.

Its making me think that my car has a 1.1 box on it despite being owned by an old man and a woman in aberdeen/dundee :o ..

Also been told that 3,300 is where the peak power on the VTR is, so thats maby why sitting in 5th at 70 you can boot it to all the car can go very quickly... or drop it down to 3rd and away you go, everyone says it the perfect modification to do on a VTR, and if mine is a 1.1 box - thats probly why i had fell inlove with the car at the dealer i bought it from

VTR box is very poor for acceleration, the 1.4 box isn't much better, but is definately an improvement, and the 1.1 box is the best of the 3.

As said, a 1.1 box sits at roughly double the revs to the speed, so 3500 is about 70, 3000 is about 60 etc.

The 1.1 box on a VTR will still do 120mph-ish, which is more than enough. Although it lacks the 'sports ratios' that the 1.6 boxes get, and a smaller diff, although i've not had any problems with running one for almost 2 years now.

vts box is meant to be good, closer ratio than vtr box, but can withstand more than a 1.1 box, i get a vts box if i were you

1.1 box will be fine tbh. also cheaper to pick up. If you do alot of miles i would stick with what you have tbh to save some fuel

So what RPM does a standard VTR with original box sit at when driving at 70?

Also, could someone explain 'sport ratios'?

whats better for acceleration, 1.1 or vts?

I swear all of this was in an earlier thread. Basically the 1.1Gearbox on the VTR is the best for acceleration, the VTS doesn't fall too far behind but has a better top end speed.

Limiter will always be the same , Gearbox will only adjust the ratio's which will result in getting to your current limiter quicker or slower depending on box,

Any gearbox you put on a vtr will make it quicker to 60.

if your put a 1.3 rallye box on, 1.1 , VTS , 1.4 XSi , s2 rallye box on all of those will be quicker to 60 over a vtr box my friend

1.3 s1 106 rallye box is the best one to put on mate if you can find a reasonably priced one as they are quite rare and people tend to charge over the top for them!

1.3 Rallye box is good, provided you don't do much motorway driving, 4500rpm @ 70mph.

Mieran, sports ratios are in the VTS/Rallye boxes etc, they're supposedly better ratios for the kind of driving that those cars are expected to do, i've never actually driven one with them, but I do know I don't have too many problems with a 1.1 box, and that changing at circa 7000rpm drops back to about 5500rpm IIRC. Which is well in the power.

On saturday I put a 1.1 box in my vtr..

I will go and do 70mph in about an hour and let you know the rpm lol..

acceleration is much better though, lower torque feels like a massive increase!

Basically tootling around at 30mph in 3rd put the foot down and it will pick up very easily whereas before it wouldnt..

    Time will tell i guess!!

2nd gear only just gets me to 50mph though but off the lights it is a lot faster

70mph is 3500rpm, as said in my post near the top.

I've done it enough in the last 2 years to know.

    ^^ x2, its 3.5k rpm @ 70mph.

    Mine's STILL going, love it

i've had a 1.1 box on mine 2 weeks and its really nice, accelerates much quicker and picks up in higher gears faster

    At 70mph in 5th im running 3750rpm!

I dont know if this difference is because i used a peugeot box but nevertheless great mod imo! Specially when you have a few spare boxes around!

its ok for general driving as you can cruise in higher gear as it still pulls..

but on the motorway this morning i was doing 80mph and it was over 4k rpms which seemed to be ruining the mpg..

    worth it though imo!!

i usually cruise between 60-70 so it doesn't effect me as much .

    0-60 feels quicker

im also thinking of doing this to my vtr and would like to add a performance clutch.
if i were to get a 1.1 box would i have to buy a 1.1 clutch or a vtr clutch?
qustion also applies to the put s1 1.3 gearbox.

Im on my second mk2 VTR now, and my current one has a 1.1 box. The acceleration is much quicker than the standard VTR box.

still use a vtr clutch mate as you don't change the flywheel
