passenger strut top domed! 00 vts

  1. #1
yes mine looks domed compared to the driver side

only noticed as im doing an engine swap so removed the strut brace...

ive since managed to get a look at one other mk1 vtr and it was the same as mine!

are they like that or do i need to reshape it and weld in some strut enforcing plates?

    stew

yeah you will as we had a saxo come into my brothers garage and it failed mot as it comes down to structure/chassie alignment or summit along those lines basically car is bent as itll sit lower on one corner

If your running hard springs for track work its known to be a weak area of the saxo/106 chassis. Can easily be resolved by getting it straightened + having some top strut plates welded on

One of my old vts' destroyed the top chassis mounts. Ran a few too many kerbs on track. The shell was soo rotten i just scrapped it rather than doing the repair

cheers lads i do have 250lb springs. ive since looked at another vts and appeared to be similar shape. i am going to reshape it and fit some plates as advised.

also noticed that my arb hits the chasis on very hard cornering. it looks like it may be bent but id get the strut top right 1st

Well i bent mine with 180lb springs so with 250 im sure its pretty easy to do lol.

Hard to see but it is doomed...

    Fixed!

    nice work mate.

not going to be able to keep my strutbrace then
  8. #8
What did you do about setting the geometry?
  9. #9
    how thick was the plates???
  10. #10
Ive just checked mine due to a problem with handling at the moment, and my driver side is domed.

How do you reshape them? Do you just go mental with a hammer and block of wood on the underside?

Ive bought some GrpN reinforcment plates this morning to weld on for the 275lbs springs now, so needs to be reshaped.

Yeah the council dug up a section of 60mph limit back road past me, which was on a slight crest just after a bend. You can see other traffic coming, but not the road surface if you know what I mean, which meant I couldnt see the ditch and 4"+ ramp. Hit it at about 50, bent two expensive alloys, bottomed out the dampers, broke my springs(!) and did that to the top mounts.

Tbh, Im surprised I didnt fly off the road and die.

Reshaping with a block of wood, a hammer and a dolly. made a couple of quick jigs off a perfect condition AX in the scrapyard and double checked them by using strutbraces.
