quick lowering question

  1. #1
hi all, got a mk2 vtr but with vts wheels... looking to lower it but just springs as cant afford dampers just yet. i want it low, but not rediculously bouncy... any ideas on wat mm to lower it by? will 50mm rub and be very bouncy?

    Thanks

Be bouncy on standard shocks at any level but won't be that bad lol as I had fucked coilovers down at 100mm on the front of my last car(didn't take care on bumpy coble roads next to my work with a big hole ) lol but it's not that bad as made out

but it was only 1 shock that was fucked for me

can get 2 new shocks, and leave rears standard would make it spot on to drive I've herd

60mm doesnt rub so anything above will be fine.
Standard shocks will be "bouncy" regardless of height. Will provide crap damping if you lower it at all

    Ok, thanks for the advice

I wouldn't run lowering springs with standard dampers for that long.
My vtr is lowered 40mm, and after about 15k miles on standard shocks they're completely shot.
Don't do any damping at all!

I wouldn't go any lower than 40 front 50 rear on standard dampers. They won't last too long on 40mm either.

This was the state of my standard shocks..
    2003 car on 55k miles.
Had been lowered 40mm on Spax springs for around 15k miles i believe...

    ^^ hehe

What really annoyed me was i couldn't get the brass collar bit off to change them.. so they're still on there!
  10. #10
Pair of grips, or use a screwdriver and hammer to get it to start twisting off
  11. #11
I tried that but no luck
I was really messing it up with the hammer.. so i decided to stop.
Think i'll just take the struts to a garage. Shouldn't cost too much to just get the collars removed.
Car's off the road until summer anyway so it's no problem

You sometimes need to be manly with them.
  13. #13
Yeh.. i found it pretty hard to apply much force without the strut just twisting in my hands.
I need someone with arm muscles
  14. #14
I found it 10 times easier when i put them in a vice...
  15. #15
put it on the floor, stand on it then get some big grips on it.
Or put it in a vice when one is available

I'll have another go next time i go home!
After putting the strut back on the car i thought about using an oil filter removal tool to do it.
Not sure if it would grip.. but in theory it could work

^^ first hard evidence I've seen, that's disgusting lol! Just goes to show.... hope you get them changed bud.

They arent that bad, a tad soft
  19. #19
I thought they were supposed to spring back? My bad.
  20. #20
Nope they are dampers although they do creep back up slowly
The spring is what pulls the damper back up.
  21. #21
    I didn't know that
My new (uprated) ones seem a lot firmer, and move back up really quickly.
Might explain why the front end doesn't feel too bad.
  22. #22
there is a certain amount of rebound built into dampers. Standards don't have much and rely mainly on the spring
  23. #23
aren't eibach the same poundage or something as standard springs so work well standard dampers? my eibach pro 35mm springs work well with standard dampers imo. not too hard but not too bouncy at all. had them on a year and a half and standard dampers are still going well

yer they are a good balanced setup
