Removing MK2 Spoiler

  1. #1
    Hii guys,

Basically, I want to remove my Mk2 spoiler and get a Mk1 spoiler. I know Mk2 spoilers are bolted on to the rear screen, when i remove it what could i use to fill the small holes on the rear screen? i know gromets will do the job but is there another way? And what would be the best way to fit the Mk1 spoiler? Tiger seal?

    Thanks!

i say stick to the mk2 spoiler. it aint all that bad! changing to mk1 will be a lot of hastle....
if you wanted, wouldnt it be easyer to fit a mk1 boot on it? as arent they the same shape at the back?

I have always prefered the mk1 spoiler though. Yeh, could get a mk1 boot but I dont think it will be that hard to just remove the mk2 and fit a mk1 spoiler.

mate i've just fitted a mk1 spoiler to my mk2 and its SO easy!

use the bolts from the mk2 spoiler to cover the holes in the window and use a rubber washer on the inside to stop it leaking, no need for sealant!

when fitting the mk1 spoiler, put the screws in the spoiler with a lil bit of paint on the end and line it up on your tailgate where you want it. then drill through the boot where the paint marks are, and use rubber washer on the inside again

Cheers for that mate. I dont really want to be drilling holes though because if I ever want to remove it I'll be left with holes on the boot. I heard tiger seal is pretty strong and once fitted won't come off?

what you want is the stuff autoglass use to stick new windscreens in mate its really strong stuff

hmmm....not sure but its up to you mate im sure you could pick up a boot lid out a scrappy for pritty cheap but that is only if it fits (i.e. lights) but i think you will be fine. also if you get bored of the mk1 look you could just use your old boot lid and put it back to standard! the screw idea with the water tight washer isnt too bad an idea but wont you still be able to see it?

True mate, the only bad thing is it will cost a bit much to get a boot lid sprayed the same color as my car. I seen a icelandic grey vtr on here and he put gromets through the holes when he removed his mk2 spoiler and they are hardly noticeable i was just wondering if there was any other way to fill the holes

if i was you mate i would save my money and keep your mk2 tailgate
i read into this when i did my spoiler and a lot of people rave about tiger seal, drilling through the boot and bolting it on is probably more effective at stopping it coming off than tigerseal though tbh

Ok mate i aint 100% sure if i'll have it though, i will pop in to a local body shop tomorrow and ask them how much they would charge to get it sprayed silver to get a rough idea of how much cash i would need to get it done and let you know

well i removed my mk2 and replaced it with a mk1 and i metal plugs off a ax to fill the holes and the same with my rear wiper u carnt c the plugs when the spoiler is fitted because covers the holes
  21. #21
I've just done this to my MK2, I used the grommets from Halfords for the holes and Tiger sealed them in. My Mk1 had 2 bolts in it so I marked the tailgate(Tip to mark it if yours has the bolts in it put a DOB of grease on the end of the bolts, get a mate and lower it into position where you want it touch the metal and lift, you now have 2 perfectly marked positions of which to drill the tailgate) I then Tiger sealed around the holes fitted the spoiler and bolted it down.
One thing I didn't count on was that one side of the MK2 wouldn't undo it kept just spinning so I had to cut through the top of it to get mole grips on the spinning bolt. Was a shame as I planned on selling the MK2 spoiler.
Hope this helps mate I hate the Mk2 spoiler that's why I changed it.

I think gromets would be better as they are hardly visible but metal plugs sound like a good idea. Thanks mate

  25. #25
go scrappy n get a mk1 boot with spoiler n fit that
  26. #26
i would just leave it the spoilers are point less anyway in my eyes. but i spose everyone has there opinion
  27. #27
heres the pics mate, you dont need to get gromets or anything just use the bolts that come with the standard spoiler on the outside, like so -

see, barely noticable! this is a pic from inside the boot, i just used a rubber seal washer to stop it leaking and a nut:

such a waste of money, look at the 3rd pic down in my last post - you cant even see the bolt when your stood anything more than a metre away, and anything closer and you'd only spot it if you were lookin for it

what size are the gromets from halfrauds?

Thanks a lot for the replies guys! and cheers for the pics ollie-vt- I'm going to do what Rez did and see how it turns out
