Extinguisher nozzle debate

  1. #1
Im debating as to where to mount my extinguisher nozzles. i have 2 and it suggests mounting one in the cockpit for the driver and one in the engine bay. now the thing is im not gonna do any msa or fia racing, just track days (often with passengers). So should i mount both inside so the passenger isn't burned alive or stick with the regs?
    cheers

And if something did happen with a passenger on board i don't think i could live knowing that i saved myself and my engine, not them

It's highly unlikely you're going to need to use it, even more so if you're only doing trackdays. Not to mention that you'd then both need to be stuck, as well. So just have it above the driver and passenger somewhere in the middle.

would it be better to wear some sort or race-suit that is fire retardant etc. to help you and your passenger out should it catch on fire? and then put one nozzle in the engine bay, and one centrally in the cockpit ?

Or is it for the 'track' look ?

No i'm not just doing the whole track look thing, i am gonna be using it quite fequently. (the car not the extinguisher may i add lol) it's just that i have seen many track cars get side impacts and rupturing fuel tanks, scares the shit out of me. your supposed to aim them at the knees, and its a 90 angle spray so i might be able to get away with putting it in the middle i guess.

I'm no expert on the matter, but this is my opinion.

If you were in a crash (side impact on the passenger side) - you could potentially rupture a fuel line anywhere from the fuel tank into the engine bay, so you do have a large area that could potentially be ignited

Can't you add another nozzle ? It depends on how much you value your engine, as could just have both in the car aiming at you and your passenger - if the engine catches fire you should have a bit of time to get out IMO.

Also, might not be worth having it aiming at you incase it goes off whilst driving ?!

Yeah lifeline say it has to point at the footwell, and there not a lot of danger of it going of it has a retaining clip, you have to pull the T quite hard. and about the nozzles, you cant use any more, if you do the pressure will be twice as low and the foam will come out really thick. and i only have a pretty standard 1.4 so nothing too pricey lol.

i think i'll just have one for both occupants

If it's just a 1.4 I wouldn't be too worried tbh about the engine - they can be replace pretty easily!

easier to replace an engine than a friends legs lol

You say it won't go off randomly, I presume you've not seen this...

And I understand your concern, but on a trackday, it's highly, highly, highly unlikely you're going to make contact with any other car, and on the rare possibility that you do, it's again, unlikely that it's going to be enough to cause a fire. As said, I understand your concern with it happening, but you'd probably be better be mounting it in a similar position to where it is in the BTCC car in the vid (top, middle of the cabin). Or ditching the Lifeline system and just getting a normal Fire Extinguisher mounted somewhere that you can easily reach.

The btcc ones are electrical. so that was probably an electrical fault. They no other way of setting mechanical ones off other than pulling the cable. I think i'm just gonna put a nozzle for each occupant. easier than spraying randomly with a handheld
