(pics added) driveshaft rubbing. looking for 2nd opinion.

  1. #1
i have a rubbing and grinding noise when i am on full lock or going around a sharp bent. i thought it was the knackered driveshaft but after looking at it last night while fixing another problem i noticed that the drivers side driveshaft is actually rubbing on the actual car on the piece of metal that connects to the bottom arm(if that makes sense).

am i right in thinking that the problem is caused by a worn/broken engine mounting ( the one on by the ECU).
or could it be something else?
  2. #2
could be rear engine mount on wrong?

It shouldn't be rubbing on anything really - any chance of a picture?

the back gearbox one you mean raunchz, that would make sense seen as i changed the gearbox not so long ago and it didnt make the noise before.
i'll try my best get a picture uploaded which in the hour.

right i've done as you said turned the mounting 180degrees, and its not worked,
could the mounting be worn? or could it be something else?

Wow Lizza that looks rough. You haven't bent the fron't lower suspension arm at all have you?
  8. #8
    looks a strange one tbh.

The only thing I can think of is that the driveshaft effectively connects the gearbox and the strut.

So i'd check the strut is all on okay, seated in the balljoint and the wishbone is secure.

Then check the gearbox, all the mounts okay ?

    Rear wishbone mount mullered?

I wouldn't drive it personally until you know what's causing it - if the driveshaft isn't buggered, then must be a missalignment between the strut and the gearbox - either way not something I'd want to drive on ?

No worries, it just means you can't do anymore damage/risk crashing it.

    You recently changed the gearbox?

I'd check all the mounts are okay, nice and tight - then check the gearbox is tight against the engine.

You sure the rear gearbox mount is the right way up? what happens if you turn it round and bolt it upto the engine?

yeah that would make sense, cant do no more damage.

i changed the box about a month ago and its been like it ever since.

i thought i took a pic of the mount after i turned it round but it turned out be a video.
i hope you can see it ok.

mount on upside down in the video

from memory the longest distance from the centre of the rubber bush to the bolt hole on the mount goes at the bottom
