window tint film...

  1. #1
was thinking about buying some window tint film and doing it myself! not really sure how to do this though. rear side windows shouldn't be that hard as you can take the window out, but how do you go about doing the rear window? won't the heater on the rear window burn it or anything when turned on?

if i was to do this on the front windows will i just apply like on the rest but with the window in the door?

    cheers

When doing your fronts they say to leave the glass in and just feed the film down bout a cm, but youd get a better finish taking em out.

how do you take them out? my front window rattles alot! which i could sort at the same time
  4. #4
haynes manual tells you how, aint done it myself, dunno whether you know but front tints have been made illegal-atm

yeh ino, i was just wondering though

when i got mine done professionally they trimed the rubber back on the front windows as they told me it would scratch the film when i wound down the windows.so just sothing to think about mate

BTW in the haynes modding manuel it says, do the tints on the out side of the window first to get it to size ,then move it to the in side.

any ideas about rear window with the heater lines?
  12. #12
just bung it on and make sure you never use the heater lines. It all that faffing around that's putting me off tinting, only what a light smoke

with the precut stuff you get the rear windscreen in three peices, then all you have to do is over lap them by about 1mm.

    it is really easy

So, with film on the rear window I can't use my Rear windscreen Heating at all ? :O
  16. #16
pretty sure you can use the rear window heating.

would have been better to make a new thread for this
  17. #17
Thought i'd use the search function and save a new thread, ha, nevermind.

Cheers tho, cause someone else said I couldn't. But then it would be pretty stupid so I thought i'd best check.

Cheers to everyone else tho for their advice on fitting window tint film.

yeah if you do a search and something isn't completely covered then it would be better to put up a new post that to bump up an old topic.

i have absolutely no idea where i heard this, but i always had it in my head to have the heated window on for ten minutes or so beforehand. apparantly this makes it easier to put the tint on or move it about?
but again, i can't really remember where thats from, so could be nonsense!

i'm not sure if this would work with tints, but it did when putting stickers on my r/c car lol.
try wetting the window slightly with a mixture of warm water and a drop of washing up liquid. it lets you move the sticker (or the window tint film) slightly and can help you push out bubbles, without the film clinging to the window.
the water will eventually dry and you wont tell.

that is the only way you can put tints on. its impossible to put them on dry like you can with a sticker. basically the more water you use the easier it is, then you just squeegee the water out.

you can certainly use the rear heater when you have tints

and you can buy the film from a lot of places including ebay and halfords.

    Just some advice Rob...

The rear window demister is fine with the tints.

When you've had your windows tinted, they do recommend not to use the windows for 12 hours just so that the film has enough time to dry.

The front side windows come out as well as the rear side windows. Remember that you have the dot matrix around the perimeter of the rear side windows and the rear windscreen. You will "never" be able to get a perfect/smooth finish. The air pockets take a while to dry out.

The rear window is left in while being tinted. If you have a rear spoiler, remove that and then put it back after. You'd obviously cut around the holes where the spolier fixes through the rear windscreen (if it's not mounted on top) and when you come to put it back, do the screws up quite tightly and then do them up properly a few days down the line. This will prevent the film being twisted in with the screws.

Remember to replace the internal draught seal on the front side windows because if you don't, the film will become scratched and you'll have to do it all again.

I myself would never have the time or patience to tint my own windows. I paid £125 to have mine done

    Hope that helps.

You can still use your rear heated screen i do no problems, just dont use it for like 2 weeks to make sure its definatly all dry
