Wheel bearing?

  1. #1
Right, had my car MOT'd yesterday, passed after a few bits were replaced. Before it went in, I was told by a friend that my passenger side, front wheel bearing was on it's way out. It's not making a whirring noise but instead a crunchy noise... depending on speed it'll have a gap of silence for about a second or 2.

Now, got the car back to me today and it's still making this horrible noise. Is there any DIY way's to check if it IS the wheel bearing and on a Mk1 VTR '99, is the wheel bearing/hub a solid unit to swap over or a pain in the ass individual bearing kit?

    Thanks

yup, jack up the front passengers side and grab the wheel one hand on each side. and wobble, if there is much play then you will need a wheel bearing

and for changing bearing it may be pressed and and you will need to use a press to fit it again . not 100% sure tho

You can do it the good old fashion way, with a clamp - don't NEED a press

If youve got a socket set, a jack and some mole grips the best bet is to take the strut out yourself and then take it and a new bearing down to a garage and get it pressed in for a cheeky fiver.

The bearings arent too bad, I get em for £26 shouldnt be too much more than that. Id replace the trackrod end wholst your there too, itll cost under a tenner for the part. The old one will probably be a bit fucked by the time youve got it loose as theyre a terrible design.

Cool stuff! I will give the 9 oclock and 3 oclock shake/movement a go. Should there be ANY play at all? (even the slightest? )

sorry but instead of making a new thread i thought i would post it here, i think im having the same problem, im getting a annoying whineing noise from my drivers side front wheel, but it goes if i put my foot on the accelerator does this sound like the wheel bearing?

No none at all, if the wheel moves the whole strut should move side to side with it, and not up and down atall.

Sounds like it yeah, the only thing that really whirs constantly without some form of squeeking to accompany it when its dead is a wheelbearing.

Im thinking my wheel bearing has gone as well
its making a funny noise when I turn to the left and the noise is coming from the front left wheel.

I will check if there is any wobble tomorrow Didnt know I could check this way.
